The marathon was a 2 loop, mostly flat course. It is run through some of the town and then most of it is on a greenway. The greenway seems very long (especially on the 2nd loop) but it was pretty. Overall, the race was good. One thing I did not like was that the marathoners actually cross the finish line and go back out for the 2nd loop. This was very demoralizing to actually cross the finish with half marathoners and be sent back out. It would be better if we looped in a different spot. Other than that, it was a good local race. There are a number of races held by the race company, so it would be good for someone who was local.

Irving Frost Marathon, Half, 10k & 5k was a pleasant surprise. I had never heard of Irving, Texas and wasn’t expecting much. Packet pick up was easy. In and out. You got your bib, long sleeve tee shirt and a beanie. There was no expo, just a table selling their merchandise. Race morning was a cold 34. The half marathon course was out and back. The Full was a double loop of the half course. We ran through downtown on the road then a sidewalk through a nature trail in a park. The park trails were very scenic. There were a few hills but nothing major. There were plenty of water stations and port-o-lets. The water stations offered water, Gatorade, chips, oranges and banana. The volunteers were great. After the race we received our medal and a short sleeved finisher shirt. Official results were instant via runsign to your phone. Post Race food was pancakes, tamales, coffee, beer garden and hot chocolate. I did not purchase the VIP experience.
My only con was the offered prepaid parking. For some reason the QR code did not work at the garage on race morning. I’m not sure if it was operator error or bad instructions. Other than that, The Irving Marathon was a great experience and I do recommend it.

While I do not recommend running a marathon in the Irving series, the Frost half is OK. I have run a few half marathons in Irving and the Frost, while far from perfect, is their better event. It’s an OK half to run during a marathon training schedule because of where it falls on the calendar and it’s not a hard course. Although, I’m now running other half marathons in DFW I anticipate will be better organized and worth the money.
Positives
– OK swag
– Friendly pacers
– Good pre and post race energy
Negatives
– Boring route
– poorly organized
– lacks shade (but not an issue in December)
