Can’t beat how well organized this race is. Tons of crowds and high energy. Second year running and although it was a hot one, I had a great time and experience. Make sure you train for hills. For sake of emphasis, make sure you train on hills.

Positives:
– Toughest half I’ve run yet. Feels like you are going uphill indefinitely
– Well organized especially after the race. They do a really good job passing out food/drinks immediately upon finishing
– Some neighborhoods had a lot of people out and cheering. Loved seeing the little kids with their power up signs

Negatives:
– The corral situation was more than a little nutty. Their A corral had too many different kinds of runners packed in like sardines. Haven’t been elbow bumped that many times since Disney (they really need more corrals)
– I think they really need to change up the course so it feels like you’re actually running in downtown Dallas. At the end of the course, as you come back to the start, you run thru city streets but for much of the race, you can’t tell you’re actually in Dallas, which is
– I took the public rail (recommended by organizers) and got to the race not super early but early enough in which I was outside long enough to be freezing by start time. I recommend taking a page out of Cowtown’s book and opening up the convention center so runners can stay warm pre race

– The race is well supported/managed; teams dedicated to safety/medical response
– Beautiful scenery. You run all the scenic areas that make Fort Worth such a cool city (Stockyards, downtown, TCU, Trinity Park, etc.)
– Multiple bands play along the route; very festive and lots of folk come out to cheer on sidelines
– Hills, hills, hills. Make sure you’ve trained on inclines (the last half mile was up hill for example)
– Some streets are in bad shape, especially first half. Be heads up to avoid potholes and nails
– The longest hill had a strong veteran presence on the side lines, which was awesome. Lots of veterans/families of veterans cheering you on! The downside is I was getting sad/down reading the multitude of KIA signs leading up the hill
– Need to stress how amazing the support staff was. They were very responsive and proactive. I saw a couple of medical related scenes in the route and the teams couldn’t have been more attentive to the injured players runners
– We had to pay $12 parking fee to pick up runners packet the day before (essentially paid $24 total parking just to run one day because you can’t get your packet on race day) also the booths only take cash which feels more 2013

While I do not recommend running a marathon in the Irving series, the Frost half is OK. I have run a few half marathons in Irving and the Frost, while far from perfect, is their better event. It’s an OK half to run during a marathon training schedule because of where it falls on the calendar and it’s not a hard course. Although, I’m now running other half marathons in DFW I anticipate will be better organized and worth the money.

Positives
– OK swag
– Friendly pacers
– Good pre and post race energy

Negatives
– Boring route
– poorly organized
– lacks shade (but not an issue in December)

Positives:
– high energy pre race area with music and MCs on stage
– early miles are scenic as you run along water’s edge and through Irving’s center
– race is for the most part flat with a coupe of hills
– public address announces your name as you finish

Negatives
– poorly organized
– majority of race lacks shade; lots of pavement in Irving which makes it feel even hotter
– route, especially late miles, is confusing
– as scenic as first set of miles are, the rest of the race is boring
– way more marketing hype than anything

Irving could be an improved experience if it was better organized and managed more effectively. There is a heavy police presence along the route and there are pacers. But the gate situation at the start is confusing and the route itself really needs some help. I chose Irving as my first marathon out of convenience but there are so many better choices in DFW. I recommend skipping this one
