Wilmington, NC has been highly praised for its charming small-town appeal, rich history and beautiful beaches. The scenic IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina course that starts at Wrightsville Beach and ends across from the USS North Carolina is the perfect destination for first time athletes, veterans looking to achieve a personal best or those looking for the ideal race-cation. The beach towns of North Carolina are full of fun and unique experiences for everyone in the family.
Swim
The ROKA swim course is staged at Wrightsville Beach and will be a unique point-to-point layout with a wave start. The swim takes place in a channel that is connected to the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway—it’s a saltwater swim, but not in the ocean. An incoming tide with athletes swimming with the current will provide fast splits for the 1.2-mile course. The water temperature will be in the upper 60’s to low 70’s Fahrenheit—perfect for wetsuit use.
Bike
The bike course takes athletes from beautiful Wrightsville Beach through historical Wilmington. As they leave Wilmington they head out to nice rural country roads that are flat and fast—the perfect course for a PR on the bike and fresh legs for the run.
Run
The IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina run course offers athletes a scenic tour of the historic downtown of Wilmington, while running through a spectator-friendly area. There will be numerous cheering spectators to keep athletes moving forward while they head out to the beautiful Greenfield Lake area. As athletes run around Greenfield Lake, they will be shaded by old live oak trees with beautiful Spanish moss. Athletes will also have great views of the lake as they make their way to the turnaround. The run course is flat and fast and offers athletes with loads of support and cheers from spectators, as well as a great opportunity for a fast run split.

Great course, starting with a very fast and scenic swim in a calm salt water bay with a pushing current that’s ideal for first-timers and experienced athletes looking to nail their fastest 70.3 swim split. Mostly flat bike course, albeit with too much illegal drafting, then a great run with a mix of sun and shade. Nice downtown T2 and finish area. Excellent support and good logistics with many reasonably priced hotel options for travelers. I’ll definitely return here to race and recommend it to my friends.
