Step Into the Story
IRONMAN 70.3 Muncie is a legacy grounded in decades of heartland pride and athlete triumph. As the longest-running 70.3 in North America, with over 45 years of history, it invites athletes to step into a story that has inspired generations. Every mile echoes the passion, perseverance, and pride of those who came before. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or honoring the spirit of endurance at your first finish line, Muncie is where your new chapter begins.
Swim
The 1.2-mile swim will take place in beautiful and historic Prairie Creek Reservoir. Athletes can enjoy a smooth swim as they will have plenty of space to enjoy and complete this legendary swim course. The Muncie swim course is one of the reasons why this race has won so many Athletes’ Choice Awards over the many years!
Bike
Athletes can expect a very fast out-and-back bike course with 56 miles of closed state highways and country roads that wind through rural Delaware and Henry counties. Light winds usually favor athletes on the return trip. Come see why this was a top-five rated Athletes’ Choice Awards bike course in 2022 & 2023!
Run
Once off the bike, athletes are treated to a competitive run around the south side of Prairie Creek Reservoir. The course continues over rolling hills that will challenge athletes before finishing back at Prairie Creek Reservoir.

The good:
-Very great course for a PR: Swim is calm, bike is flat with a few rollers, run is challenging but fast
-Crowd support at transitions is great
-Plenty of nutrition throughout run course
-Ice sponges on run course (this isn’t the case for all IM courses, so it was nice to see them here!)
-Run course is an out-and-back, so you know what to expect and when to push on the back half of the course
The not so good:
-Finish line was kind of underwhelming (on a grass field in the middle of people getting food from a hot dog truck – kind of anticlimactic)
-Race shirt was meh
-Post-race food did not have a ton of variety (bbq sandwiches and hot dogs)
-Muncie isn’t the most exciting venue – I’d recommend staying in Indianapolis and driving to the race site if you’re coming from out of town
-Swim may not be wetsuit legal (wetsuits were NOT allowed this year)
Overall, I’d recommend this race if you’re looking to PR, but it can be hot. As with other IM events, the organization and support is phenomenal, but this won’t be the most interesting scenery in the world.
