Discover the charm of the Hoosier Sate by racing in IRONMAN 70.3. It’s no wonder why this family-friendly town has been hosting athletes and spectators for over 40 years. Outdoor adventures, children’s activities and a memorable IRONMAN experience keeps athletes coming back every summer.
Swim
The 1,275-acre body of water will have an expected water temperature of 78° F. Due to the size of Prairie Creek Reservoir, the water temperature can change quickly race week so participants are advised to bring a wetsuit if they have one. The water is usually very calm, but heavy winds can cause the water to become slightly choppy.
Bike
Athletes can expect a very fast out-and-back bike course with 56 miles of closed state highways and country roads that wind through rural Delaware and Henry counties. The course hovers approx. 1,000 feet above sea level with less than a couple hundred feet of elevation change. Light winds usually favor athletes on the return trip.
Run
After the fast out-and-back bike course athletes are treated to a competitive run around the south side of Prairie Creek Reservoir. The course continues over rolling hills that challenge athletes before finishing back at Prairie Creek Reservoir.

The good:
-Very great course for a PR: Swim is calm, bike is flat with a few rollers, run is challenging but fast
-Crowd support at transitions is great
-Plenty of nutrition throughout run course
-Ice sponges on run course (this isn’t the case for all IM courses, so it was nice to see them here!)
-Run course is an out-and-back, so you know what to expect and when to push on the back half of the course
The not so good:
-Finish line was kind of underwhelming (on a grass field in the middle of people getting food from a hot dog truck – kind of anticlimactic)
-Race shirt was meh
-Post-race food did not have a ton of variety (bbq sandwiches and hot dogs)
-Muncie isn’t the most exciting venue – I’d recommend staying in Indianapolis and driving to the race site if you’re coming from out of town
-Swim may not be wetsuit legal (wetsuits were NOT allowed this year)
Overall, I’d recommend this race if you’re looking to PR, but it can be hot. As with other IM events, the organization and support is phenomenal, but this won’t be the most interesting scenery in the world.
