Midwest’s Untapped Resort
On the shores of Lake Michigan and set in the charming resort-like town of Frankfort, IRONMAN 70.3 Michigan offers a rare blend of natural beauty and small-town warmth. From breathtaking views along the lakeshore to the iconic sunsets from the pier, every mile is a postcard-worthy moment. With a smooth, approachable course perfect for all levels and a community that rolls out the red carpet, it’s no wonder this race is consistently ranked among the best by athletes; this course is a favorite for a reason. Race hard, then kick back with your toes in the sand and the sunset in your sights. This is the Midwest, redefined.
Swim
The swim start and finish is located right next to the transition area on Betsie Bay. This one-loop swim course is entirely within protected Betsie Bay which should provide really nice conditions on race day.
Bike
The bike course will travel along highway M-22 and surrounding roads in Benzie County. The bike course features two out-and-back sections, largely on M-22. There are a few hills out there, but much of the course is rolling or flat.
Run
The 13.1-mile run is made up of two out and back loops that will take place on paved trails and roads around Betsie Bay, between the City of Frankfort and the Village of Elberta. The run course is pretty flat, and athletes will be able to see and feel the energy from the transition area and finish line even when they’re on the far side of Betsie Bay near Elberta, which should provide a cool experience on race day.

This was my first IRONMAN event to participate in and first time taking on the 70.3 distance in a race. Overall I was very impressed with how it was run. The scenery of northern Michigan as spread out along the course really is on display. A sheltered lake swim (not quite Lake Michigan), riding out on M-22 into the countryside, and using a bike path around Betsie Lake for most of the run with the finish steps from the beach and the quaint downtown of Frankfort, MI is pretty epic. If you’re looking to take the plunge into IRONMAN, this is a great one to pick.
