I ran in 2024 which I assume was the race’s first year. Packet pickup was in a parking lot near the start line which was fine because it allowed us to know how to navigate to the start line. The location was not somewhere I would have easily walked to from my hotel. The short sleeve soft cotton t-shirt was nice and I’ve worn it since.
The 2024 race route was two out and backs on a bike trail along a river. There was little to no shade and little to no scenery. The 2024 race was very hot and humid (Oklahoma in late June) so I dressed appropriately and carried my own handheld. Some runners did not carry their own water. One woman dropped from the half to the 10K (one out and back) when she got back to the start line. She took it upon herself to start handing out water bottles to those continuing the second out and back because the race did not have enough volunteers to hand out water. I noticed the water stop along the course only had very small cups for water. This would be OK if the weather were not in the 80’s with high humidity. After I finished my race, I got a medal but it was missing the magnet that says Oklahoma City on it. I wrote to the organizers and they mailed the missing piece mailed to me a few weeks later.
I thought Oklahoma City was a nice place to visit as a tourist. Hopefully this race will improve so it can become a better destination race.
