This was my second year running this race but the first year for the 25k. The course is a 25k loop so 50k runners run it in the opposite direction from the 25k, hit an aid station at the start/finish line, then turn around and retrace their steps back to the start/finish. According to Strava both races are longer than 25k/50k. This year the 25k measured 18 miles on my Strava.
The pre-race emails were excellent with plenty of information including course conditions. There is a pre-race briefing the night before at packet pickup that includes pizza and the briefing was very informative. With the snow & ice that we got recently, many runners wanted to know the course conditions. They said a significant portion of the course was covered in ice and that it was advised to wear Yaktrax or microspikes if we had them but doable without. This year the race start was moved to 7am rather than 6:30 so that runners would not need to wear a headlamp for the first 30 minutes. That was a great call since having a headlamp for such a small portion of the race was a nuisance. The course has a good mix of rolling hills and flat sections, single-track trails, asphalt road, fire road, and creek crossings. Though, this year more than half of the course was covered in ice. Finisher’s shirt is a long sleeve Rabbit shirt with super soft material and a small attractive logo. Excellent aid stations (3 of them on the 25k course plus one at the 50k turn-around) with lots of cooked food (bacon, french toast sticks, hash browns, quesadilla), PB&J, snack food, junk food, Tailwind, water, and hot chocolate. Considering this race is mid-February the weather varies from year to year so unless you sign up at the last minute it will be a surprise. This year we had a cool start with increasing temperature throughout the race.

I feel like ultra runners should go run any race started by David Horton – they all have a lot of character. I dropped down to the 25k after a winter injury, and this was still a tough (17 mile) race. Lovely, tho!
I stayed in the cabins overnight, and rolled out for a 630 am start. Lots of friendly runners and good spirits.
