This is actually kind of a funny story. I was searching for 5K’s near Salem, NH and saw this race in Manchester. I just assumed it was in Manchester, NH which was perfect for this Friday as I work in MA on Fridays but was driving up to Concord, NH for the evening and Manchester, NH is in the middle. However I realized about 1.5 weeks before the race it was actually in Manchester, MA aka Manchester-by-the-Sea. This was actually completely fine as I work on the North Shore on Fridays about 10-15 minutes from Manchester, MA. It just didn’t break up my drive as nicely. There was good pre race communication. I was able to arrive quite early as it was closer to my work than I expected so I got prime parking by the start. There were kids races from 5 to 6pm and the 5K at 6pm. The race raises money for a school and starts and finishes at the school. There was race day packet pick-up which was simple and included bib and tech shirt. There were bathrooms to use at the school’s gym. The race had about 200 participants and a lot of kids. Not necessarily a complaint as it is good to encourage kids to be active but it does make navigating around them harder during a race and they lined up front to start. The race was mostly well organized. The course was nice through neighborhoods around the school. While in general NH is a beautiful state, I do think Manchester, MA is prettier than Manchester, NH. Not anything super scenic but the neighborhoods were pretty with lots of trees. the course is a loop and has some mild hills as expected on the North Shore but nothing worse than the other races I’ve done around here. Production mostly good as it was well marked, there were mile markers and a water station. However the course seemed long as I reached the 1st mile marker a bit past 1.2 miles despite not having bad tangents. My total time mileage was longer than usual for a 5K which is why my time was so slow. I was doing about 12 minute miles so should have had a 37-38 minute finish. There were also some sections kind of tight. Otherwise the race was nice. There were bananas at the end and food for purchase. I had less time to get to Concord than I thought since I was coming from Manchester, MA not Manchester, NH so I had to leave right away. Overall this was a solid 5K and very similar to the other 5K’s I’ve done to raise money for schools in the area. Would do it again if I was in town the Friday of the race but I’d get the state right next time.
