The Himmelswegelauf was in its 7th edition in 2018 and featured a marathon, half marathon, 10k and Nordic walking competitions. It commemorates the finding of “Nebra Sky Disc” a relict from the Bronze Age, manufactured about 1,600 BC. All races finish at the “Arche Nebra” a museum on top of a little ascent (nice treat before you cross the finish line). The area is really neat. “Saale-Unstrut” area is Germany’s most northern vineyard area and is known for a many little fortresses, medieval villages and many many bike pathes along the riviera. At this point, the race is not very international. Credit card payment or Paypal were no options – I registered on race day for the half marathon (40€) since I could wire money ahead of time. Anyway: I email them and they reserved a spot for me and it went super smooth. We were about 350 people at the start line and after running through the little town of Laucha I found myself running on asphalted bike paths with the river to my left and vineyards to my right, field of wheat and flowers and every now and then the underground changed to field pathes. It was very warm, but water/ electrolytes/ juices were handed out about every 2km. As much as I liked the nature, it wasn’t my most enjoyable race because of the heat and I opted for too heavy shoes since it thought it would have a bit more “trail feeling” but it was mostly a road race. Towards the end, I started overtaking some Nordic Walkers where the different race routes where linked together. As I mentioned, the finish line is on top of an elevation and even a small hill can feel cruel in the heat and exhaustion. A stage with music, instant printing of race certificates and some food trucks were set up. The medal is a small replica of the sky disc and is really cute. The race shirt had to be bought separately. Clothes were transported from the start to the finish. The trains from the finish area back to the different starting points only run once/ hour, some runners had friends or family coming with a car to pick them up but parking at the finish is very limited and many roads are blocked for the runners. I d definitely do it again and I would spend more time to explore the area.
