As a history buff, this race had been on my radar for some time, but it fell somewhat short of my hopes. First, the positives: It was held on a former military base and used sections that are usually off-limits to the public. Also, there is a (small) military museum onsite that we had access to. A bagpipe band played prior to the race, which was cool. Now onto what could be improved: Since they have access to the site, they could utilize it better. We ran past a couple of (overgrown) bunkers that the RD said the race previously ran through. That would have been more exciting than just going past them. Also, since the race honors the Hellcat, maybe they could use the old runway. It is listed as active, but could likely be shut down during the race as others have done. This would have made for a more interesting course than the perimeter road.

This event takes place on the former base where the Hellcat aircraft were manufactured during WWII. It now houses a military museum, and an enormous parcel of beautiful land. The course seemed to be about half trail, with the other half on long deserted macadam and normal industrial park roads. Overall, a very nice, flat course.
