Since 1985, the High Point Medical Center Heart Strides Program has been helping patients with cardiac disease. Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation treatment is essential for improving a patient’s quality of life and helps prevent future heart or lung recurrences. Today, the Heart Strides program helps hundreds of patients per year throughout the Triad. The Heart & Sole 5K Run and Charity Walk was created to raise funds for the sole purpose of assisting patients with the cost of the Heart Strides Program.
The Heart Strides Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is designed for people who are suffering from heart and/or lung disease. Participants work toward a healthy recovery supervised by a team of skilled processionals. Through exercise, nutrition, counseling, education and behavioral modification, cardiac and pulmonary patients in our community are making great strides toward independent and healthy lifestyles.

Starts and ends in downtown High Point, and since it’s the second Saturday of September in North Carolina, expect a cooker. Other than downtown, you get some nondescript 30-40 mph roads to run on, and a few decent hills. Not too memorable. I just remember that I was in an all-out sprint with my running club teammate (and roommate) to the finish, and I beat him by two seconds. You can pick up your packet on race day, and free parking is just a short walk away. Probably some Gatorade and chocolate milk at the finish line, I can’t remember.
