As soon as you bend a corner, you’re back to going straight up hill. The views were extraordinary, but the traffic was a bit sketchy, people flying down the road feet from you. This poor guy along the course was limping because he was cramping so bad, I would hope in the years to come they’d add some bananas or some kind of potassium at each aid station. The people at the stations were super friendly and encouraging. If you are trying to PR, I wouldn’t recommend this course. The distance is 26.2 but it feels like an ultra with the hills. Checked it off the list but not sure I’d do it again alone! The medal is super detailed and awesome. I’ve never cramped much running but these hills cooked me!

The cost…about 2500 feet of elevation gain. The reward, great views of Hayden Lake and the surrounding area. This is a small race for marathoners (80-90 runners the year I ran), so there will be a lot of quiet and alone time on this course. Also, along with the elevation gain, there are many twists and turns on the road. There are segments where someone could be 100-200 yards ahead or behind you and you will not know they are there. If you are OK with a smaller production and race size, this is a great race and venue. Also, if you pair it with Spokane Marathon the next day, you receive an additional reward. It’s not much, but it is a small display piece to put your 2 medals in showing you completed 2 runs back to back!

Glad I did it, check it off my list, but probably won’t do Hayden again. With 2,100ish ft of elevation gain, this marathon is a trail runners dream. As a strict road runner though, it eats at your legs quicker than you think.
The views are great do 80% of the race though, location is prime. As tough as it is I would recommend trying it once.

This is a small half and full (and quarter) marathon race that starts at Hayden Lake. The full runs around the Lake and is very hilly. The half runs along the Lake and then through residential areas. Very well organized for such a small race with a nice shirt and medal. The course was very scenic even though we ran through light rain most of the race. Recommended.
