Since the 4th of July was on a Friday, this meant a 3 day weekend so I was looking for somewhere fun to go that had a half marathon. There were a lot of events I wanted to do in DC this weekend and Bishop’s Events had a half marathon on Sunday so DC was perfect for the long weekend. Along with the half on Sunday, I also wanted to do a shorter race on July 4. I decided to see what Bishop’s Events had to offer and chose this race as it was fairly close to DC. Bishop’s Events is a really nice, friendly race company that host frequent events in the DMV area that raise money for charity. I like to support them whenever I am in town. This race was at Burke Lake Park in VA about 20-30 minutes outside DC. I have done several Bishop’s Events but this was the first time I did a race on this course. There was not much pre race communication but the website was updated. Use the GPS coordinates they put on the website to find the parking area. Parking was easy and there is race day packet pick-up. Packet included bib and a short sleeved tech shirt. I started running with Bishop’s in 2021 and back then there swag was not great and well below average but the swag seems to be continually improving as the company grows and the shirts are quite nice. The course is an out and back. We were called out in waves by pace that helped spread us out. The first ~ 1/2 mile is on roads with some rolling hills, the next ~2 miles are on a trail and then you do the ~1/2 mile again on the road. The trail was fun. It was not particularly technical but was real trail not just a rail trail and it was a bit more challenging than road but nothing crazy. Trail shoes are not necessary. It was easy for trail but a bit more difficult than the average road race. No major hills just some ups and downs on the trail. The trail is scenic and shaded which was nice as it was hot and there are some views of the lake. Production is fine with the turnaround clearly marked and an aid station you pass twice at the entrance to the trail. My only production complaint it the trail was a little tight with so many runners. I finished ~38 minutes which is where I’ve been finishing tougher 5K which I felt like was pretty good as this race was a bit tougher than average. You get a medal at the end. I love getting medals for 5K. The medal has a nice design and is much improved from the medals Bishop’s gave out 4 years ago. There were coolers with water and gatorade and some bags of snacks like chips, cookies and fruit snacks. Overall this was a nice race and the course was fun and slightly challenging. I would definitely like to do a half marathon on this course someday as I think it would be a nice challenge.
