The ‘Breaks’ of Southwestern Oklahoma is an area of rugged ranch land characterized by canyons and buttes created by erosion. The region has whitish semi-erosive gypsum strata in the soil from ancient shallow seas that covered the area 270 to 220 million years ago. The gypsum layers are visible in … MORE

I had a wonderful experience in this race. The race director said that this would be the last year which made lots of people sad. Hopefully someone else carries the torch.
Here are some details: the course is completely on trails. The 2025 version was 10+ mile loops. This allowed there to be 5 races running concurrently, 10-50 miles. There were aid stations every 2.5 miles so the race had a nice symmetry. I break ultras into smaller chunks anyway, so the race does it for you. The aid stations had the standard ultra fair with fruit, salty, and candy options. I actually found myself skipping an aid station each lap because I just didn’t need anything that frequently. You can easily run the race with a standard water bottle an no food of your own. The race provides it all. My only suggestion on the aid stations would be to carry the same electrolyte drink at each aid station. Since they were different, I had an odd concoction of fluid in my water bottle of different colored sports drinks that upset my stomach. Minor detail though.
The course had some legitimate hills that I hiked up. There were steep downhills as well that I walked. The hills were fair, 1900 vertical feet for 30 miles. I enjoy some hills in a course and this course struck that Goldilocks amount of not too many or too few.
We got really lucky with weather. It was 50s and 60s and overcast for the first 25 miles. The sun came out for my final 5, so it was a glimpse of how hot the course can be. There is no shade out there, so be mindful if you run it in the sun. We had a little rain before the start so the first lap was rather muddy. By lap 2 things dried out and the course was great. There are minimal amounts of changing trails and when you do make a turn, the course is well marked. You’d have to really not be paying attention to make a wrong turn. No need to print/download a map (limited cell reception out there so don’t count on consistent cell service) and one can easily navigate the course.
Race production was excellent! The t-shirt is much higher quality than most races I run, as is the medal and bib. There is not a lot of junk SWAG like I get from other races that just goes in the trash can either. I got a shirt and a travel size bottle of hand sanitizer. I don’t want anything more than that anyway. Considering how low cost the race is (cheapest ultra I have ever run), the high quality of everything exceeded my expectations. I managed to have a great day running and was in 2nd place. They gave me a nice plaque for the accomplishment which I thought was such a nice touch too.
I loved this race! I recommend it (if it’s happening in future years) to anyone looking for a fun ultra in the Oklahoma wilderness.
