Run like a pro with a legend! The annual Essentia Health Dick Beardsley Races are set to run in Detroit Lakes this September! Join thousands of runners as you take on mile after mile of scenic Minnesota roadway on the Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, or Youth Run courses.
Bust it like Beardsley down the course while experiencing the best fall foliage the legendary runner’s home state offers. Dick Beardsley himself will be at the race for an opportunity for you to meet him in person! Plus, he’ll sing and play guitar at the Friday night pasta dinner.
Enjoy a legendary run with an equally legendary runner.
Half Marathon
Celebrate this famous Minnesotan’s passion for running by getting in some miles at the Dick Beardsley Races! It’s fun for the whole family, with options for all age groups.
10K
Starting and finishing at Detroit Lakes Pavilion, the 10K course will take you along 6.2 miles of glittering Detroit Lake shoreline. With a mostly flat course, it’s a perfect way to get in your end of summer run!
Andy Beardsley Memorial 5K
The Andy Beardsley Memorial 5K, which was renamed after Dick Beardsley’s son who died in 2015, is one of our most special events. Andy was a local to Detroit Lakes who loved the outdoors especially if he was fishing with his dad. Although he didn’t consider himself a runner, Andy completed a 5K, exemplifying his ability to take on a challenge and complete a race.
Youth Run
Even the kids can join in the fun! Register your little runners for Dick Beardsley youth run. Youth runners will receive a t-shirt and a medal to commemorate their achievement!
Post-Race Fun
Post-race refreshments, snacks, AND ice cream (courtesy of Hub 41) will be waiting for you at the finish line! Keep the post-race fun going by checking out local places for the best food and drink this side of Minnesota!
Pasta Dinner
Join the legendary runner at the Friday night pasta dinner! This fan favorite event is sure to make your weekend as you indulge in delicious food and drinks. Dick will be there to speak, meet the runners and maybe even sing a few great songs! The fun starts the Friday before the race at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion where you’ll be starting and finishing your race.

Packet Pick Up: Was held at the Pavilion which was an indoor building. The bib table was close to the door so the line went out the door. With such a huge building I thought this could have been organized better
Swag: LOVED the sweat shirt and the design and one of the tables gave out smaller posters with the design which I framed. Also got a cooling towel-love these things!
Start Line: They had a string barrier to separate the Half marathon and 5K runners (who were on the right) but was disappointed to see the start line photographer on the right side so only the 5K ppl had pics.
Course: The course was beautiful! You started by going out away from the lake about a mile and then turning and coming back towards the lake for a couple miles. For the most part you could see the lake on your left. There were a few sections where you went through some neighborhoods but all the houses were either small and cute or beautiful. There was a very small section, maybe 1/2 mile, of dirt road where there was construction. Some of the course was on sidewalks but some on the sides of the road. LOTS of cheer sections and one was so loud you could hear it from miles away. My main disappointment was with the photography on the course. I only had one pic. It seemed like one of the photography spots was after the 10K split so it only captured the 10K ppl. Then when I came into the finish there was multiple pics of this group of 2 ppl yet I was buried to the side of them and wasn’t sure why they didn’t get one of me as those 2 were technically a distance ahead of me. I also had to wait in line for a porta potty on course as there was only one at the water stops.
Overall: I liked the scenery of this course and I’d recommend staying a few days after the race to enjoy the town and go find all the troll sculptures and the Golden Rabbit. There is one troll in the park where the race starts and then we went out the next day to find the rest. I would not recommend tryin g to find the pre-race as it’s about 6-7 miles total to find them all and they are wooded, some are hilly.
Fast and fun, great run around the Lake
The course is pretty flat, the smell of the lake was refreshing. Well organized course. 2nd time running it. It's a course I enjoy repeating. MORE

Overall Rating: Very good. Dick Beardsley greeted every runner as they came in and the race had a nice hometown feel.
Course Difficulty: A little challenging with the wind, but overall not bad. This was my first run of the week and I was trying for 5 hrs. Beating it by 6 min should give some insight to the course difficulty.
Course Scenery: Nice sunny day running around the lake.
Race Production: Excellent. No frills packet pickup/small expo. Good course support. Timely start.
Race Swag: Spinner medal and a hoodie-nice.
My Performance: Hit exactly the time I wanted so good.
Took the week to cross four states off and this was the starter race.

This was not my best race due to life getting in the way of training. I would do it again to redeem myself. Nice medals and long sleeve t-shirts. The course goes around Detroit Lake with decent scenery. The event went off and was easy to follow.
