I signed up for the 6-hour race. This was my first undefined distance event. I thought of it as one of those choose-your-own-adventure situations. My goal was a fully catered, 15- or 20-mile run in a pretty park. After every 2.4 mile loop, I asked myself if I was still having fun and the answer was always a resounding YES! I never intended to run (and walk) the whole time but everyone was so friendly and the vibe was super fun so I just kept going around. That was how I ran my accidental marathon. I decided to become a lifer at this event, but the next year my kids talked me into the MCM again so I guess it will have to be almost every year. The marathon medal was an exceptionally artsy sugar skull composed of Oregon items: salmon for eyebrows, clams for eyes, beavers, state flag crest, grapes, etc. It hits that sweet spot between cute and creepy, sort of like the Hillbilly mama medal.
