Due to the ongoing lease negotiations between the Coachella Valley Water District and Riverside County Parks and Open Space District, Desert Triathlon will not take place in 2023. We expect an announcement regarding a long-term lease by the end of the year which will dictate our plans going into 2024 and beyond.”

The Playtri Desert Triathlon celebrates its 21st year as the unofficial kickoff of the triathlon season (hey, we’re legal now!). Desert Triathlon is the perfect race for both the new or beginner triathlete, and the experienced triathlete looking to shake off their winter rust. We’re situated on the calendar as the perfect warmup to several longer distance races, including the 70.3 in Oceanside.
The event includes two distances and three different race categories:
Sprint Triathlon – 500 meter swim, 14 mile bike, 3.1 mile run
Sprint Duathlon – 1 mile run, 14 mile bike, 3.1 mile run
Olympic Triathlon – 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike, 10 kilometer run
Olympic Aquabike – 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike
The Tri Club Championship returns to the Playtri Desert Triathlon in 2020. As always, tri teams from around the country and world will compete for the overall team win.

The lake swim was BEAUTIFUL! The bike course was flat, fast, well-monitored and safe. The venue is family/spectator friendly: All events take place on or near Lake Cahuilla. There are spectators everywhere (except on the bike route). Easy registration and check-in. Free parking at event. Well monitored and safe routes. Some things you won’t find at this event: A lot of SWAG (although the medals where nice), a big expo, a beer garden, an elaborate post race meal or on-course bands. These are nice to have but not essential for a season opener. The weather gods smiled on the race this year. So, a hassle-free season opener. I’ll be back next year.
