The Derby 50K Ultra Run will start and finish in front of the Derby Community Building and it will be run in a counter-clockwise direction facing traffic. The turns and some straights will be marked with yellow arrows painted on the highway. It’s your responsibility to look for them.
It’s 31.5 miles on 3 loops of rolling hills in a beautiful country setting on asphalt and dirt. It’s a great event for those wanting to do their first ultra run. There is no cut off. This is a 31.5-mile fun run with no bells & whistles. The course is not closed to traffic. Derby Road is in the middle of nowhere but travelers use it to get somewhere. SO, IN ADDITION TO EXERCISING YOUR BODY PLEASE EXERCISE CAUTION!
There will be 3 aid stations with energy drink & water, chips, cookies, etc. You will pass each aid station 3 times. However, in an effort to minimize trash, please bring a water bottle belt or hand-held bottle with you. There will not be any cups at the aid stations. The people at the aid stations give up their day and time just for you, please be nice to them. Also, any clothing left behind and not collected will not be mailed back you. It will all be donated to local charities.
This is a very low-key, no-frills race. If you are expecting port-a-potties, expos or to be waited on, I suggest you stay home.

This race in North Carolina was well put together. It was 90% pavement with gravel road. Fast course with winner coming in under four hours! Weather was perfect starting in the 40’s and climbing into the low 60’s. Beautiful area too!
I made the rookie mistake of running the first loop (10.5 miles) way too fast. I ended up running with a really fun group and wasn’t paying attention to pace. This resulted in much suffering the second half. I still finished and took a minute off my fastest previous time. With the amount of training I’ve been doing though I think I could have done much better. Sometimes we need the reminder I suppose even though we know better.
No injuries at least. Got a bit of gut bomb on the second loop due to some incredibly strongly mixed Gatorade.
This was hosted at a small church who put on a great post run spaghetti dinner! Then drove four hours home.
