The Crooked Road 24-Hour Ultra is a challenging and rewarding ultramarathon that tests your endurance to the limit. Returning to Rocky Mount, Virginia, this race takes place on a scenic, mostly flat 1.178-mile loop course comprised of a non-paved cinder track. The path winds through Waid Park, along the Pigg River, and around many of the athletic fields at Waid. More than just a race, it’s an experience.
Named for Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, “The Crooked Road,” the race embodies the spirit of perseverance and the supportive community found along Virginia’s musical highways. Whether you’re aiming to complete your first ultramarathon or aiming to push your personal best, the Crooked Road 24-Hour Ultra offers a unique opportunity to challenge yourself and achieve something extraordinary.
Founded in 2011 by the Crooked Road running Club of Franklin County Virginia, the Crooked Road 24 Hour Ultra event had a successful run of 12 years, attracting runners from all over the country. After the 2022 race, with club membership declining the club dissolved and the race went into hibernation.
Fast forward to 2024, and Blue Ridge Racing earned the blessing of former Race Director Ricky Scott to bring back the Crooked Road 24 Hour Ultra in its same great location – Franklin County’s Waid Park in Rocky Mount, Virginia.
Blue Ridge Racing is well poised to revive the Crooked Road 24 Hour Ultra to its former glory and beyond. Owner Molly Bullington has over 18 years of race management experience spanning from 5Ks to multi-day adventure races, with the Blue Ridge Marathon as the most widely recognized race that she directs. With plans to incorporate relay teams and prizes for shorter time periods, the Crooked Road 24 Hour Ultra is set to be better than ever this year!

This was an extremely well-organized race. The layout was convenient. There was plenty of parking close tothe start/finish line, plenty of friendly people, and the aid station was great. I ended up starting 4 hours late due to an extended flight delay, but that was no problem. I also didn’t stay very long, but while I was there, the aid station served pizza, barbecue chicken, and pork sliders, along with the usual aid station fare. They also had gourmet coffee and soft drinks at all hours of the day. The course was smooth with a crushed-limestone surface, and there was only one slight hill that was definitely runnable. The area was surrounded by hills, which were very pretty, even though the leaves had not yet budded out. I didn’t make my mileage goal this year due to injuries, but I definitely want to go back again.

The event was professionally organized and received excellent support. The course was well-maintained and free of tripping hazards, making it enjoyable to navigate. The aid station provided an impressive selection of refreshments, including beverages, pizza, barbecue, soups, and various snacks to help participants stay energized throughout the race. As this was my first experience with a 24-hour race, I look forward to participating again next year. If you haven’t run the Crooked Road I recommend giving it a try.
