Crafted by runners. Welcome to Athens, Georgia; known as the “Classic City.” Since 1806, Athens has been the city of many starts. Public education started here, with the University of Georgia becoming the first land-grant institution. The B-52’s and REM both started their careers in venues across town. And garden clubs? They started here, too!
A New Start. We are adding another new start to the story of Athens, Georgia. The Classic City Marathon starts in historic downtown Athens and travels through all our beautiful city streets, vibrant communities, and stunning greenways! There are three ways to run the Classic City. Register for the full marathon, the Athena Half Marathon, or run the marathon as a relay in a team of 2-4 people.
Guided by History. The marathon might have originated in Ancient Greece, but the modern marathon weekend is right here in Georgia’s Classic City! The Athens Road Runners club and its Classic City Marathon Association are determined to make the lululemon Classic City Marathon the best possible experience for all runners, families, friends, spectators, sponsors, businesses, volunteers, city and county workers, and everyone else in the Athens area!
Athena, the patron goddess of wisdom, heroic endeavor, and the arts, will be our guide. Join the Classic City for a modern marathon grounded in history and crafted by runners.

all the logistics that a runner could want, were addressed with the planning of this event, 3 hotels gave runners discounts and all 3 were an easy walk to the start, finish, gear drop and expo. we lucked out with the weather.. breezy and 40 degrees was very nice. the day before was torrential rain and wind.
the expo was very low key…. a few local vendors, but the race shirt was a long sleeve tech.
race morning went off without a hitch. corrals separated estimated speeds. the course looked very hilly on paper, but I didn’t notice anything substantial until the last 5 miles ( my legs were pretty shot at that point)
finishers medal was nice and we received a laurel wreath after crossing the finish line. I didn’t attend the post race event or food.
volunteers were absolutely spectacular and numerous as were officers directing traffic and keeping us on course
I would highly recommend this marathon for anyone looking for a smallish event (400 marathoners, 600 1/2..?). or any one looking for a scenic Georgia event . we ran in the university of Georgia campus, along bike paths and next to a river.
