I wouldn’t normally travel to Central Florida for a race in June but I was in Orlando for a conference and on a quest to get to Sun Level in Half Fanatics so I will take what I can get. This race is located about an hour from Orlando and it is hot. It is produced by Awesomesauce who I believe is going out of business so I’m not sure this race will continue. It is a very laid, back relaxed type of race. It takes place in a park and you run the same loop about 10 times. The loop is a little over 1 mile long. Packet pickup is race day. They initially said there would be no shirt but since they are going out of business they did let us choose a swag item which appeared to be from prior years. I got a nice orange tech shirt. The designs are all really cool but do not have year or location. Race start is very relaxed with pre race instructions about 5 mins before the start. The course is a lollipop loop with a short straight section to the loop. You can run the loop in either direction to break it up. The loops are very boring but this is the only safe option for a race in Florida in the heat as the loops allows the RD to keep an eye on the runners and it is easy to drop down a distance. There are also some homemade signs along the course to add some entertainment and encouragement. There is a big aid station you pass each loop which also allows for easy access to aid. The aid station was good but they brag about how it is the most epic aid station ever and maybe it would be if I didn’t do a mainly race the week before but mainly marathons has better aid stations. The aid station still had water, Gatorade and a large assortment of sweet and salty snacks. The scenery is nice but it gets boring. It also got really hot by the end. I had a solid pace for the heat though I had to walk the last 2 laps rather slowly. You keep track with rubber bands and at the end you let the timer know you are done. You then pick out a medal. They are old medals because the medal company they used to use closed but they are all cool looking. There are then some basic post race treats near the finish. Overall not the most exciting race and definitely not my first choice for Florida with the loops and the heat but if you are a local or in central Florida already it is a solid race.
So Hot I Must Be Close to the Sun
