I ran the Brooklyn Mother’s Day Half Marathon this year and really enjoyed the experience. The race supports the non-profit Every Mother Counts, which added a meaningful element to the day.
Race morning includes a 5K and 10K in addition to the half marathon, with those races starting after the half. The half marathon course is four loops of Prospect Park — which means going up and over Battle Pass Hill four separate times. If you know Prospect Park, you know that adds up!
One thing to note: there is no pre-race packet pickup. Bib pickup happens race morning, and shirts are picked up after finishing. This year’s shirt was bright yellow and great — I’ve already worn it multiple times and received compliments on it. The medal was also very nice.
This is definitely a smaller race atmosphere. The half marathon had fewer than 80 finishers this year, which made things feel relaxed and friendly. I even chatted with the Race Director after the race, and he could not have been nicer.
Best surprise of the day: I won my first-ever age group award (3rd place). Granted, there were only three people in my age group… but I’m still counting it! 😄
Overall, a fun and well-organized local race supporting a good cause. I enjoyed the day and would recommend it to runners who don’t mind loops and hills.
