A small committee of dedicated Kansas City, Missouri Police members voluntarily formed and created the first annual Broadway Bridge Run in 2005 with the help and support of the KCPD administration, area businesses, and community members and organizations. Finding a unique location was important to the committee; so a course was selected providing participants a scenic view coupled with the combination of hills and flat sections. The Broadway Bridge Run route started in the historic City Market and offered views including the Broadway Bridge, Charles B. Wheeler Airport, and the Downtown Skyline. The original route is still the focus of the Broadway Bridge Run.
Over the years, the Broadway Bridge Run has grown in the number of participants; the committee now includes community and business representatives, recently added the half marathon route, but most important of all the efforts of those involved has increased the benefits for the special athletes.
Note: Due to the uncertainty of the future of the Buck O’Neil Bridge (formerly the Broadway Bridge) 2018 will be the last running of the Broadway Bridge Run. After much deliberation the difficult decision was made to put efforts into other events to support Special Olympic athletes here in the Kansas City area. Thanks to all that have participated in the past, and to those running in this year’s race as well. We hope you have had as much fun running with us as we have had putting on the event. We hope you will join us for the 13th and final running of the Broadway Bridge Run in September for the last opportunity to run across the Missouri River.
The Broadway Bridge 10K is part of the Heartland 30K Series which consists of three 10Ks – the Dot to Dot 10K, the Plaza 10K, and the Broadway Bridge 10K.

The half marathon course is flat for the first half of the half marathon and hilly for the second half. The police presence was great as they were cheering you on as they stopped traffic. It could use more water stops as they are about every 2 miles.

This course is more difficult than its better-known cousin, the Hospital Hill Half Marathon. Don’t be fooled by the flat four mile stretch around the Downtown Airport early in the race, for a series of monster hills await you. Fortunately the scenery is second to none in a race that will possibly get you your most beautiful PW (personal worst) ever.
