This is a 5K that takes place on a Thursday evening in June in Boston. It raises money for American Heart Association. It is mostly law firms coming to run but individuals can run it as well. I did it last year and decided it would be a fun and crazy thing to travel back to Boston from Madagascar and immediately run a 5K so decided to do it again. It takes place at the Seaport. The location was moved to a brewery this year but it’s a similar location and course as last year. There was good pre race communication and a really cute new logo for Boston with the Make Way for Ducklings ducks. I parked at a paid lot near the start. One big issue coming from Madagascar and immediately running a race is GI issues. I had no GI issues when I was in Madagascar but immediately upon returning I was having serious issues. I thought about skipping the race but knew I could mostly walk it and wanted the bragging rights of running a 5K after returning from Madagascar. The race start/finish area was outside the brewery. I got my bib and saw the medals were adorable this year with the ducklings and I was so excited. No other swag unless you fundraise more. My gut was also excited and luckily there were porta potties. You were assigned corrals based on how much you fundraise which is a bit odd but I knew I’d be super slow as I really couldn’t do anything but walk-jog without upsetting my stomach too much so the back was fine with me. With all my Boston fundraising couldn’t really fundraise much for this. The race was pretty good. It was flat and well marked with clocks each mile. They added a 1 mile walk likely after people cut the course last year as it was too hot. This year was hot but not as bad as last year. Scenery is okay. Some scenery is cool by the ships and you get some views of the airport which would probably be cooler if I didn’t just spend like 17 hours on a plane. Some scenes are a bit industrial and smell of fish. My goal was under 45 minutes. I knew I couldn’t do faster. I was so sad they ran out of medals. Ugh they said there was a lot of last minute sign ups. Seriously just mark no medal on bibs for last minute sign ups. If any race runs out of medals and has a system where people who register last don’t get medals and everyone who signed up early no matter their pace gets one I will automatically increase your race rave score a sneaker as I understand a charity race not wanting to overorder medals but it is not fair. Anyways I was super sad and crabby and feeling sick. There was post race food but I skipped it as I couldn’t really eat. I did grab a water bottle and was excited to see someone who didn’t care about their medal left it there and left without it so I grabbed it and got my adorable duckling medal. I was also sad to see that no post race communication apologized about running out of medals. I am not opposed to doing this race again and assuming I don’t run it after immediately flying from a low-income county and getting major GI issues I should be fast enough for a medal but it did leave a bad taste that would make me less likely to sign up in the future.
You don't need to be a lawyer to join

This is a 5K located in Boston in the Seaport area in early June on a Thursday and raises money for the American Heart Association. At first I thought it might be only for lawyers and while a lot of lawyers do it and law firms participate as teams, anyone can join so I decided to sign up. It takes place at 7pm which is good as there is enough time to get there from the Boston suburbs I work at on Thursday. There was good pre race communication. Teams could pick up the bib early but individuals had to get it race day. I do wish I could have picked it up early since I’m in Boston on Wednesdays anyways but it wasn’t a big deal. There was a parking structure very close the Cruiseport where the race started. However it was kind of expensive to park in. There is security check at the Cruiseport so you absolutely have to bring your ID. It was an extremely hot night (more on this later) so it was great that we had a large air conditioned area to hang out at the start and finish. Packet pick-up was easy and included bib. There inside area was set up nicely with some venues, booths, selfie areas etc. Your swag item which was a nice bag you got at the end which worked well so you didn’t have to carry it or bring it back to your car as a lot of people probably got there by public transportation or dropped off and the parking garage while not far was about a 5-10 minute walk. The race started on time and had announcements and an anthem. There was no indication of where to line up by pace which is one area of improvement as it is a pretty big race with close to 1000 people so the start was a bit chaotic. As I said, it was hot. When it is really hot I always do 30 second run and 30 second walk intervals and they were a bit difficult to do it the crowd at first but it spread out quickly. The scenery for the race was pretty terrible but I totally get why the course was what it was. The course just goes around shipping containers and industrial parts of the seaport. There is the occasional nice view of the harbor but most of it is not very nice and smells of fish. However since the race starts late and the workers are done for the day, no one is using these roads and the race was able to be on closed roads and after the first 1/2 mile or so we were nicely spaced out. Boston doesn’t have a great public area for races like NYC has with Central Park. The options are the Charles River Esplanade, Boston Commons or Castle Island and while those are more scenic they have pretty narrow running paths and would be very crowded for a 5K this size so I will take the terrible scenery for wide open roads. Course was well marked with mile markers and they added some extra aid stations for the heat which I appreciated. There was one production issue though that made me very angry and that was that they let people cut the course because of the heat. I have absolutely no issues with letting people leave the course if they are too hot especially as this race is raising money for the American Heart Association and it’d be pretty bad if someone had a heart attack or heat stroke during the race. However they just let them go through the finish line and get a finish time and be in the results even though they didn’t complete a 5K. They should have took their bibs away while they were letting them cut the course to still allow the participants the experience of running through the finish line but not get an official time. Anyways I sucked it up and finished the whole 5K. I didn’t have the fastest 5K time ever but I was very impressed with my time for the heat. It helped that the course was flat. I was also very happy there were medals at the end since there usually aren’t for 5K’s in New England. They also had mini burritos and burrito bowls including vegan ones so it was nice to get a heart healthy food option at the end. Overall I enjoyed this race but they needed a better plan for the runners they let cut the course due to the heat. I would do it again as it is convenient but hope for better weather.
