This is a 5 mile race in Concord, NH that is part of the Capital Area Race Series (CARS). I’ve done quite a few of the series this year and last year. This race takes place the third Saturday in July. This was my first year doing this race as I usually do the Shoreline Half Marathon in Western, NY this day. However I had plans in Boston Friday night so I had to stay local. There was a pre race email and race was well organized. My dad also did the race and picked up our packets early on Friday so I can’t comment on packet pick-up. Packet included bib and a nice polyblend shirt. It starts at Memorial field in Concord, NH nearby the high school where the coach the race is in honor of used to coach. 5 miles is kind of a fun distance. A bit more challenging than a 5K but not too challenging if you are going to run a half the next day. This is a fairly challenging 5K. The first about 1.25 miles is along an unshaded road with a hill at the end and it is fairy tough. Luckily it was a bit cooler today than it had been but it was still hot. You do run by the animal shelter where I adopted my cat in this section so I waved hi to the animals. The next part is nice and shaded and mostly downhill. Then there is a section through a boarding school in Concord which has some inclines and declines but no big hills. You then run past Concord Hospital. This part has uphills and downhills and it’s a bit annoying you are relegated to the sidewalk. You then take at turn and run back into memorial field and end on the track. It’s a bit annoying though as there is a long grassy section and minimal time on the track. It is fun to end on the track. There were a couple water stops and mile markers and the course was well marked. My finishing time was fine. I would’ve loved to finish under 1 hour but it was too hot and hilly. There is no medal. There is water, sodas and typical post race snacks. Overall this is a well-organized, fairly challenging shorter race. I didn’t love the unshaded section or the hills but I’d do it again if I am in town. However I got tickets to a certain movie in 70mm IMAX in Toronto this weekend next year so I am planning to do the Shoreline Half Marathon next year.
