I would do this race again! Loved it!

The course was beautiful Fred Beekman Park at the Ohio State University. It’s a small race with a handful of solo runners and a lot of teams. I ran it as a solo. The course wound around a football field and a baseball field and it was great to watch a few games as we ran around. It served as a great distraction, especially since the course is not flat.

This is a great race if you’re looking for a PR. I shaved almost an hour off for a fantastic PR.

Since this race supports a scholarship for the siblings and children of those killed in action, the teams consisted of ROTC and Team RWB, etc. There were a few flag carriers and several gear-luggers out there giving it there all with all the added weight. It was impressive.

The race production was smooth. They provided a lot of food. While the selection was limited, the food never ran out and there was enough variety to satisfy all nutiotional needs. The people are very friendly and supportive. The crowd was support was remarkable. Lots of friends, families, and team members to cheer everyone on. Also, the baseball and football spectators cheered us on, as well.

Bathrooms — indoor plumbing, heated, clean! A runners dream!

Swag was unique. We were given tech shirts, but since they are unisex, it’s really a parachute for a small person like me. Instead of a medal, we received bracelets engraved with the name of a lost soldier, the date they died and the war they fought in. I thought that was really neat. You also get a signature coin which is really pretty.

Wow, this sounds like an amazing event that reminds me of Bataan (if Bataan were 7+ hours longer!). Congrats on the huge PR, I need to know what you're eating for your pre-race meal that you're shaving an hour off your personal best. :) It must feel strange to watch people come and go and come and go and start the game and end the game and go home, all while you're still running. You definitely have a nose for the cool races Lorelei, and it doesn't hurt that you live in a state that's full of them. Great job, and thanks for another thoughtful review! LESS

Hi Mike! Since running is part of my everyday routine, so my eating habits are everyday routines. I don’t eat anything special pre-race. I just eat what I always eat. I don’t like surprising my body by giving it something it’s not already expecting. However, I am very mindful about giving it what it needs when it needs it. When I need energy, I give it carbs. When I need recovery, I give it proteins. So pre-race, I’ll choose a breakfast that is lighter and higher in carbs. With all that said, the most important meal that affects my race is pre-race dinner. Most dinner choices are fine with me. I like to stick with a pasta dinner because that is a psychological part of race day. But, if I’m hungry for something else, my rule of thumb is to NOT eat greasy foods. For my body, that can destroy a race by giving me GI distress. My advice is to simply know your body and what it needs. That comes from experience and mindfulness. Training time is the best time to learn this. As for shaving a PR, I like to reflect on my weaknesses and put a game plan together for overcoming them. The hard part about that is in being honest with yourself and then becoming your own drill sargent. And you have to go with what YOU want, not what anyone else wants. I don’t like running for speed, so I don’t work on shaving a 5K PR. However, I love running the miles so I focus on endurance. Others might prefer the speed. To each his own. To you your own. I hope any of your readers finds this helpful. And thank YOU for all your continued support. LESS
