– Elevation gain: Every so often you will go up a BIG hill, but there is plenty of gently rolling or flat sections. The mud made the hills a real chore. Would be easier on a drier day.
– Aid stations: Every ~6 miles with the last one being 5ish miles from the finish. They had everything you could ask for and very nice volunteers.
– Scenery: If you’re unfamiliar with Forest Park like I was, it is literally a forest park. Cool trees and stuff but no real vistas.
– Production: Great race production and course marking. They even had volunteers stationed at the more confusing points.
– Overall: this was my first 50k and I did most of my training before I moved to the PNW from a very flat island. I wouldn’t recommend this one for your first 50k unless you have the opportunity to do a lot of hill training and serious hiking.

This is a 1.93 mile loop through Carkeek Park. Each loop has ~450 feet of gain. There are two brutal hills on the loop, but enough of the course is runnable to make it fun to strategize where you’re gonna find some speed. The race is very laid back. The coordinators at the aid station were fantastic and kept the encouragement, electrolytes, coffee, and treats flowing through the day. It was also cool to look for Easter eggs on the course. This is a great race on its own or as a training run/ diagnostic as it’s pretty inexpensive and well supported.

If you haven’t done a trail race this would be a good one for a first time. Almost 0 elevation gain and pretty easy to navigate. Some sections had dips and roots and stuff, but overall pretty safe. I did the 10M which started 90 minutes after the longer distances and conflicts between the two groups of runners were minimal. My one gripe is the long out and back section on a gravel road. The Lake Houston park is very nice and well kept. The volunteers and signage were good, though I do wish there was better guidance to packet pickup.

The first 3/4 mile contains probably 80% of the total elevation gain for this race. Luckily that section is 2-3 people wide so passing and getting passed aren’t an issue. In the 5 mile race the participants got well spaced out after the opening hill.

Miles 2 and 3 meander through rolling hills in the forest, but mostly flat. Aid station was at about 2 miles in and had gels, water for portable containers, etc. Great placement given you just summited the hill.

Mile 4 and 5 get a little technical with single track rocks, roots, and a steep descent towards the end.

My only minor complaint is that my Garmin only said 4.24 and others who finished around me had other numbers all between 4.24 and 4.75. I don’t feel like I ran ~8 minute miles especially with the hill at the beginning, but I’m sure they measured the distance manually and it’s just a case of bad GPS coverage.

Overall fantastic race. I’ve lived in Galveston, TX for the last 4 years so it felt great to run a trail in the PNW again even if there was a huge hill involved.

It’s a simple, totally flat out and back on the beach at Galveston. You will most likely have the wind in your face for one of the directions. There is loose sand for 25 yards or so at the start/finish, but aside from that it’s pretty well packed sand. Bring a head lamp as there are a lot of holes on the beach.
