A late November race in The North can be cold and this one was. We had a high in the low 40s, some wind and some rain. It actually snowed on the way back to the hotel!
We took the train from Boston. Much more comfortable than a flight and we were 5 minutes from City Hall which was next to our hotel. It’s also a 5 minute walk from this area to the start/finish area.
Bag drop and porta potties were not very convenient. They ran out of food and I was in the middle of the pack! Plenty of water stops and porta potties. Handed out gel at 3 locations.
They used a virtual swag bag which I am all for, but there was nothing worthwhile in it.
The Expo had many empty tables/booths but I saw Med and Dessy speak!

This race starts at 5AM in down town Honolulu. Most runners take a shuttle bus to a park to wait for the race. There are a few small bridges over a canal from the park to get to the start line, so don’t stay in the park too long!
I like the heat but the race was not as hot as I expected.
This is a well run big city type marathon in a beautiful location.

Many Boston Marathon runners use this to test their fitness. It is a very flat course, but it is still 20 miles of running.
It can be cold and it can be wet, so come prepared for anything.
I had a tough race in 2017 as I was not prepared to run 20 miles.

I’ve run this race in the remnants of a tropical storm and I’ve run in in 80F heat with 100% humidity.
I would say to expect it to be hot and humid and you will be fine.
The course is crowded so get to the front if you want to PR. Otherwise, wait until Kenmore Square to make your move.

This is a challenging half-marathon.
Great Bay is known for it’s hills. There are several steep and long hills on this course and they can eat you alive.
Fortunately there are only a few of these hills and if you run smartly you will survive and enjoy the great scenery of the Great Bay Estuary.
The race is run partly in Newmarket, NH on pavement, then on dirt roads as you run out into the Great Bay Estuary.
I find it awesome to be running a race on a dirt road in the woods and to be able to smell the forest and salty air.
The after race party takes place at several bars and the American Legion Hall. Smuttynose Brewing provides the post race beverages and there is plenty of pizza and snacks after the race also.
The Over The Rainbow 5K starts with the half, so don’t try to keep up with the lead pack in the beginning, they are only running 3.1 miles!

If you live in the Boston area or Southern Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont this is a great race for you.
Lowell is fairly easy to get to and there is plenty of parking at the Tsongas Arena.
The course is basically two loops through Lowell and Methuen, MA with the Merrimack River ia always on your right.
The course is very flat and as such fast. I believe that this race ranks high in the percentage of runners who qualify for Boston.
Crowd support is pretty good and the water stops are well manned. Local high school groups compete to see who has the best water stop. These groups have been doing the water stops for years and they know what they are doing.
It can be cold on race day. The first year I ran the race it actually snowed on the way home and I froze for the entire race. So pack well and be prepared for any type of weather.

Bring your passport because you will need it to register with Customs before the race.
The pre-race dinner is worth it. This is a small race so you will get to see most of the runners several times and dinner is a great way to get to know a few people.

If this is your first Boston you should:
Arrive a day or two early and enjoy the weekend.
Go to the Expo, even if you just walk around and get free samples.
Know that the race is not entirely down hill until Heart Break Hill. There are plenty of small hills all along the course.
There’s nothing like Boylston Street!

The BAA knows how to manage a race. This race is based out of the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston which is near the end of the Orange Line, so very convenient and easy to get to.
The start of the race can be congested. If you plan to go for a PR be sure to line up early and near the front.
Also, the grass will be wet from dew so you may want to change into your running shoes and socks just before you line up.
The course is not flat but there are no significant hills either. While Boston may not seem like a scenic location, this race goes through some very scenic parts of Boston.
Crowd support is pretty good and the BAA has plenty of water stops.
This race is part of the BAA Distance Medley, which I ran in 2012. I’ll never forget seeing the winners of the Distance Medley receive their $100K checks!
All runners get a nice shirt and medal, if you run The Medley you get a medal for that as well.

My 2012 Hartford Marathon was an experience. You can read my blog post for all of the details, but I was the last runner to cross the starting line.
Hartford is a very well organized race and I fell in love with the Hartford Marathon Foundation that day. They manage many races in CT throughout the year and they are pros.
Everyone talks about the medals that Hartford gives out. My medal from 2012 was awesome and the 2014 medal had a Beatles theme, I believe it was their 25th year.
The moment I arrived in Hartford I felt welcomed. It was such a friendly environment and that race day will always hold a special place in my heart.
This race even makes an effort to be environmentally aware. Regretfully, this is a rare feature at any race.
A great fall marathon in a great New England city!
