There’s a high school cafeteria to hang out in before the race with ample parking right at the start/finish. Definitely a very convenient race, especially if you’re local.
The course is simple, mostly flat. There’s one big hill around mile 7. The rest of it is flat-ish with some deceptively rolling segments.
My one complaint both years I’ve run it is the lack of water stops and bathrooms. And the stops they do have may only have 1-2 volunteers making it hard to keep up with the runners. I carried water the second time I ran it which was absolutely the right call.
They didn’t have my time at first and took a few days to get me in the results. Talking to other runners, this seems to be a fairly common occurrence. But all was fixed in the end.
Overall, I got a PR. It’s a convenient race and simple enough. Just some small things could be better.

This race has everything I want in a half.
The Course:
It’s fairly scenic with most of the race going along the water and/or through beautiful parts of downtown Charleston. The course is very flat so it’s perfect for a fast time. There are plenty of spots for spectators and there were a lot of people out, even on a cold day.
Logistics:
It’s easy to get to and from. I walked to the start from a hotel downtown. The gear check was easy. The bathroom lines were about typical for a race, not short but not terrible either. The finish area looked great but I didn’t stick around because it was a pretty cold day.
Swag/Organization:
Tshirt, medal, and beanie were cool. Nothing special but definitely better than some races. Race communication was great. No real issues to complain about.

Positives:
The course is super flat and simple. It’s pretty much impossible to stress about the course itself.
The water stops every mile were great. It takes so much pressure off if you miss one.
Packet pickup, bag drop, etc. were flawless and simple.
Weather was near perfect for September (mid/upper 50s).
Less awesome aspects/just FYIs:
There really is almost no crowd support. The only spot people see you is at the halfway spot and finish. I guess this should be obvious but it was more noticeably quiet than I expected.
The parking situation isn’t great. There was no real parking control race morning making for a longer than necessary wait to get in and some added stress. Just try to get there before 6 and/or prepare to be patient.
Given the size of the field, there should have been a few more port-a-potties. Certainly not that unique to have this complaint but combined with the parking situation, it made for a little more stress than is ideal.

The race website says your GPS watch won’t work but mine worked fine, as did everyone else I talked to. I measured 26.39 miles on my watch (Garmin 265) which is totally in the range of normal for me for a marathon.
The course is net downhill and great. There are a lot of little turns which is one reason it feels like it runs a little long. But again, very much in the range of normal and about what I expected.
It had rained the day before so the path was a little softer than I’d like. So you may slip a tiny bit on your step but not really that bad. I wore race shoes and everything was fine.
The volunteers were honestly the best part. Every single water stop they were perfect, calling out water or electrolytes, engaging with you on the handoff, and encouraging. It seems so small but makes a world of difference.
Very little crowd support because there is literally no place for them. Really only one on-course bathroom around the halfway point so if that’s a worry, it’s better to find a different race.
It was a windy day but the course is mostly protected by trees so it wasn’t that bad. There are a few areas near the end where the wind or sun can hit you.
Last half mile felt like a great downhill. I think there was more elevation loss in that segment than any other part of the race.
But overall, simple, well organized, and a fairly fast course. Definitely recommend.
