This was a fun point to point race and really played up the Hatfield & McCoy feud theme. The River Road half, run was relatively flat with some rolling hills. Ability to run double half marathons and achieve two states (KY/WV) on the same day. I only ran the River Road, and based on elevation maps and participant discussion, it was definitely the easier of the two. Plenty of water stops, but not many porta-potties. There is one section of the course that is a trail primarily used for ATV rides. Because it had been raining the week prior to the race, the trail was muddy and there were several ruts with puddles to run (or walk) around. The view was pretty because you were running in a valley between the mountains, but a lot of it was quite rural. This was fun race!

I completed this race in 2017 and it was part of a series. I’m not sure it is even held any longer as 2019 was the last year I could find information for. It was a small race, mostly KC locals who had never run a half marathon before. It was a progression series over the course of four months, with an event each month starting at one mile distance, then a 5k, then a 10k, and finally the half marathon.
