This was my first ever marathon. If you are relatively new to marathons the 1.5% grade SOUNDS like it wouldn’t be to bad. However, it was relentless and that 13.1 miles back was grueling for me. If you’re an experienced road marathoner the dirt road was very well maintained and compact so that shouldn’t be an issue, it wasn’t for me. If you’re an experienced TRAIL marathoner, the dirt road has no rocks or technical aspects to it beyond having to turn on your headlamp in the tunnels.

That said, it was amazing, a beautiful course with great views even on the cloudy slightly damp day we had. You can see my struggle bus journey at the link below. Will do it again…..someday 🙂

I liked everything about the event from the expo to the race day festivities themselves. What I did not like was the 6am start time and having to use the shuttle buses. Having stayed south of town it was annoying to see that workers were setting up a ‘Runners Drop Area’ at the start line that I could have used but had to drive on into town anyways. All of the materials stated very clearly that there was NO drop off at the start lines so that was kindof frustrating. Shirt is nice, medal is heavy, and the weather and scenery are superb.
Let me sleep in just one extra hour and it would be a must do every year for certain.

Every year the Bloomsday team makes things just a little better. After a dozen or so times it’s just part of the calendar now. I miss some but always regret it later. This particular time and year was my PB,
