I ran this on September 15, 2019. The temperature was in the low to mid 50s and it rained the entire time. A couple spots on the course had a slight headwind, but not enough to slow you down. Yes, this is a downhill course but you really need to train your legs for running downhill for a long period of time. I started off conservatively and it paid off in dividends the second half. Many people went out way too fast because of the downhill and were dragging those last 8 miles. Be prepared to run on a trail. The trail did have puddles on most parts, so I really had to watch where I was running the entire race due to puddles, mud, and rocks. This did make it more challenging but it kept my mind preoccupied. I was not a huge fan of the 2 miles in the tunnel. It is humid and dark, so a headlamp is a must. There are some small potholes in the tunnel so you need to be careful about where you step in there. There is hardly any crowd support but the scenery makes up for that! I ran a personal best by over 6 1/2 minutes and BQed by over 7 1/2 minutes. If you are looking to BQ and/or run a PR, this is the course for it!

Chicago is a must for all marathoners. The event is well-run and the course is super fast in a decent weather. It was in the 60s with on-and-off rain when I ran it in 2018. The corrals are well organized and I didnt feel like I needed to do much weaving around other runners. I ran on the blue tangent line the entire race but still ended up running .2 over. GPS does not work well because of the tall buildings so I purchased a stryd foot pod to really on for an accurate pace. It worked like a charm and I would highly recommend it. The expo is huge! The finish area was well organized. I stayed at a hotel right along Grant Park so it was an easy walk to the start and from the finish.

Overall I loved this race. Flat and fast course. It starts and ends on the boardwalk along the ocean. The course goes through beautiful neighborhoods and parks. My only complaint is that parts are run on a trail surface. It was tough for me to keep switching between running on pavement and the trails. There is also very little crowd support. It is a smaller race so race logistics are easy. Great swag and a great post race after party.

Maybe it was because I didnt have a great race performance but I did not like this course. There were so many turns, especially the first half of the race. No matter how diligent I was about running the tangents, I still add .2 to my distance. The course is pretty boring with the exception of the small part that runs near and on the boardwalk. There is a long out and back section that just sucks. When I first started running on it I could see the very fast runners already heading towards the finish area while I had many more miles to go, which really did not help me at all mentally. A lot of other runners had the same complaint. This is the only marathon I have run that I would not recommend.

MCM is one of those races that should be on every runner’s bucket list. The course is flat for the most part with the exception of a couple notable hills the first 5 miles and one final hill right before the finish line. There are marines everywhere volunteering at the expo and during the race. Receiving your finisher’s medal from a marine after the race really completes the event. You seem many cool DC sites during the race such as the Washington Monument and the Capitol. There is a lot of crowd support during most of the race. Mile 11 is the Blue Mile with pictures of marines who have passed away. It is hard to not get emotional during that mile as it has so much meaning. My only complaint was that the starting area was VERY disorganized. So many people ignored the signs with the pace ranges where they should line up. Most people lined up too far ahead of where they should have been, which caused a lot of weaving around slower runners the first few miles. I have heard that MCM now has a corral system in place so hopefully that helps.

Maine is beautiful and this course did not disappoint. It is not a flat course and there are definitely some challenging parts with rolling hills. But the scenery is beautiful and there was actually a decent amount of crowd support for a smaller race. The swag bag is unlike any other I have received from a race. Plus the city of Portland is just an awesome place to visit.

This course is mostly downhill until the last few miles which have a lot of incline and are on a busy, open road. Cars were flying by me very closely during that part. At one point a truck pulled out right in front of me cutting me off. Where were the course marshals? Hardly any crowd support. It was a brutally hot day when I ran this race, so keep in mind the weather can be hot at this time of the year.

This was my first marathon, and as a local to the Albany area, this was a great choice for me. The course is very flat and can be fast if the weather is cool. Some years it can be pretty warm and humid, but others it can be cool with highs in the 50s. The year I ran it the weather was ideal. There is very little crowd support and several sections are on bike paths with hardly and crowd support. The last 5 miles are on a bike path and at times I was alone during those tough final miles. This can be challenging. It is a smaller race and the logistics are easy, which makes is great for a first timer.
