This course is NOT the typical Lake Powell course. I’ve run that course before and much prefer it. I was not a big fan of the Page Rim trail. It was very very hilly with some rock scrambling. It took 5 miles to reach the lake and I found the views just okay (could be in part because I had to watch my feet so often!). That said, I love Vacation Races and they played the cards they were dealt this year admirably. I will absolutely run with them again and trust them to always make an event a party for the runners! The extra eclipse swag was awesome.

Vacation Races are the cream of the crop. They do such a phenomenal job with production and every aspect of their races! The scenery at this one was different…I only saw a handful of Joshua Trees the whole race…but the coolest part by far was looking back at the hundreds of glowing headlamps winding through the course. Mile two was the toughest with an uphill through softsand in a relatively tight pack. I performed my usual for a tough course (this is not a PR course). I didn’t see many stars since we had an almost full moon, but the sunset at the beginning of the race was epic. I would do this race again (or any Vacation Race) in a heartbeat! The glow-in-the-dark medal is cool. 😉

The first half is slow uphill…steeper than I thought…but the second half is fast downhill. There was almost no helpful pre-race communication.

This race as billed as “flat and fast” but it was “hot and hilly.” It was SO HUMID the day I did the race. I could feel oppressive humidity at 4:30 in the morning and it just got worse. The course was NOT flat. Very hilly throughout, and has an uphill finish. It should have been a pretty course (along the river) but the runners were in the road so we couldn’t even see the river. The aid station waters weren’t always working either.
That said, I love Magnolia and think it’s cool they do a race. They need help making it a better production though. It should be more of a party at the finish and they need more pre-race communication. The shirt and bag were cool. I thought the medal was plain.

Chip and Joanna make this a great experience for kids! The kids get treated like the main runners after finishing…they get chocolate milk and their goody bag, plus a really awesome legit medal. The course is just up and down a pavement strip but the finish was perfect.

Vacation Races did a wonderful job organizing this race. Everything was seamless and communication was really good before and after. The course was well-marked, beautiful, and mostly downhill. The recorded podcast about the course was really helpful. The medal was enormous! The race shirt wasn’t great though, and the expo was really small (my only other races were Rock ‘n Roll and Disney which had HUGE expos). I will definitely race with Vacation Races again, and will for sure be doing Powell again! Highly recommend.
