This was a new course for the 10th anniversary of the Oakland Marathon. It was a good course, the only critique I have is that we did a 1 mile stretch of a road a total of three times…which was tough. But by the time I did 2 and 3 it was past 20 miles so I was a bit out of it, so I didn’t care too much.
One thing that really bothered me was that the swag this year wasn’t nearly as awesome as in other years. I would have thought for the 10 year anniversary they’d go all out…and they really didn’t. All other years the marathoners got thick half zip pullovers…this year we got a thin long sleeve shirt with a hood, not quite as satisfying. And the sponsors this year didn’t seem as plentiful…I did finish late so it’s possible there were more before I crossed the finish line but my wife reported the same thing (that there were not as many sponsors as the previous years). We also both felt that the sponsors all seemed a bit grumpy…which was odd to us. Not something we’ve experienced before.
A big praise, and I mean HUGE and something that really helps to tip the scale on the positive side is that the on course was AMAZING…one of the best out of the 30+ races I’ve done and the best I’ve seen at Oakland. The volunteers were terrific, cheering us on to the last runner. The people/ volunteers at the aid stops were so sweet and supportive. The police officers helping to direct traffic were awesome and very supportive. The volunteers at each street crossing were fantastic. And everyone was great about directing us in the right direction and keeping the runners safe. Tons of Oaklanders came out to support us runners. Each aid stop for the marathoners was very WELL stocked with Gu chews and gels in a variety of flavors. And the course was very well marked…it was so great and helpful! And made a world of difference!
I love the Oakland races because it is such an amazing showcase of a city that I absolutely love. I love how well it shows the people of Oakland, their strength and courage, all the obstacles they have overcome. I am so proud of Oakland and loved the 10 years I lived in the city, so this race despite any downfalls will always hold a special place in my heart and I’ll keep on doing it year after year!

This race was awesome from start to finish! Pre-race they had a fun little expo and everyone there was just so friendly, and very helpful in finding answers to questions. Race morning the shuttles were great, and they had free hot coffee for runners which was greatly appreciated since it was a bit cold at 6am. The race course was Gorgeous! The water stops were plentiful and very well stocked with anything you could need, I could’ve left my water bottle in the hotel! At the finish the atmosphere was celebratory and so fun! The pool party with live music was perfect and probably the best post race celebration I’ve experienced! And the community support and love surrounding this race just can’t be beat, it really just bumped this race up to one of the best I’ve participated in and hope too again. The one thing I might change is staying in a upgraded room at the hard rock hotel (super convenient to be so close but the room was bare bones w/ no fridge or coffee maker) or staying in another close by hotel.

Absolutely loved this race and am thinking about doing it again! The course was great, and I barely noticed the out and back portion. The community support was excellent, made the race for me! People came out of their homes along the course to cheer us on, and I just loved that! And the swag…so fantastic! Just overall a really great experience!

I was expecting this race to be gorgeous but it definitely didn’t live up to the hype. It was extremely hilly, which wasn’t really told to runners, and you just saw a lot of the same. The course was also poorly measured…my own watch a long with several other people’s marked it .5 miles longer than it should’ve been. My half was 13.6 not 13.1. The one positive was that the aide station volunteers were extremely sweet and supportive, along with all the volunteers I encountered. They were the highlight of the race for me.
