Production is by the same team that does the Air Force Marathon so logistics were very similar. The good thing is Cape Canaveral is a much nicer place than Dayton, OH. Weather was weird. Super windy and humid. Got dumped on (rain) in the second mile. Very flat – my course difficulty rating was higher than 1 “shoe” due to the strong crosswinds and headwinds. The t-shirt was sub-average if you ask me. Not to mention the fact that the graphic on the front was screen printed off-center. I liked the medal. The post race festival/area was really nice. You get to tour a bunch of old NASA vessels in the hangar. I also got the Armed Forces Series Medal after this event which made the moment significantly better than it would’ve been otherwise. I probably wouldn’t run this race again, but it was enjoyable for the one-time experience. I stayed at a hotel just north of the airport and drove a rental out to Cape Canaveral for the expo and race. A bit of a drive but not annoying. My performance was not very good, but I was recovering from pneumonia and was used to running in 30-40º weather, not 70º. With unseasonable cool weather (50’s) and no wind, this is a PR-worthy course.

This was a fantastic race experience. The organization was impeccable. I’ve not ever run a major marathon, but this is by far the best marathon in which I’ve ever participated. Getting around D.C. is easy, plenty of places to eat and shop for pre-race fueling, great for sight-seeing. I loved this whole weekend. Weather was great, course scenery never gets boring, and so many great people/runners around you the whole time. The medal is always super unique. I would 100% run this marathon again. The cost for lodging and registration fee, etc. is so worth it.

I’ve raced 15k’s and half marathons, but never a 10-miler. I enjoy the distance and this course has to be one of the best – if not the best – in the U.S. They didn’t regulate the wave starts very well so it was annoying weaving in and out of people in the first half mile who should have started later, but other than that, I really enjoyed this race and would do it again. I wasn’t in great shape, but still had a blast.

The only three good things about this race: The Fairborn Flyzone (only 3% of the course), the flyover at the start, and the cold beer afterward was the best I’d ever had… Mid-September in Dayton is a summer race. If you like running marathons in 80º+, go for it. You might somewhat enjoy this one. I hated it. The scenery sucks, you supposedly have to get there really early so I waited FOUR HOURS before the race began – the race organizers claim you should do it because of delays with security measures. Logistics need work. You can’t even find a nice place to lie down because the grass is dry and dead and it sticks you, never mind the ants. The free food afterward was very average. In short, I will never do this marathon again and only recommend it if you’re going for the Armed Forces Series Challenge.

SUPER flat! This is a great PR course.
It looks like the weather in 2024 was a bit of an anomaly. It was perfect – 40’s and 50’s throughout. Definitely made for a pleasurable experience that may not be the case in subsequent years.
Port-a-johns were not abundant enough at the start/finish area.
My favorite part of the race was the last 1/2 mile. There were a few turns through the quaint little downtown area and it was a great motivator making the last turn and getting the finish line in view. Definitely helped with my kick.
I PR’d on 20-25 miles per week and plenty of cross training.
I stayed in the Outer Banks and would do the same if I ran this race again.
