This race has the insane views of Patagonia you are hoping for! The whole course is worthy of photo taking with the incredible mountains and turquoise lakes. The 50k course is basically a 42k marathon on a gravel road, and then the last 5 miles on grass. Grass feels great after so much downhill on the road. If you are a trail runner, you will think this is a fast and easy course, only about 3,500ft of elevation gain/loss. I got my new 50k PR! If you are a road runner, you will think this course is hilly. The 42k and 50k start together which is nice, because the ultra field is very small and then you’re not off running alone the entire race. The weather can be unpredictable (we had 2-3 hours of rain), so make sure you bring your layers. It started in the high 30s and ended in the 40s.
This race was so well organized. I was probably one of the few Americans to not participate in this race via Marathon Tours. It was super easy to just book my own trip and accommodation in Puerto Natales, and significantly cheaper. The race fee included bus transport to and from Puerto Natales to the start and finish (and spectators could buy a seat too!) and this went very smoothly and there was no hassle on race day. Many Chileans and other South Americans come to this race and stay in town, so I enjoyed taking the buses and meeting a diverse bunch of fellow runners. There were also showers at the finish line! Every last thing about the race was so well thought out and organized. The swag was fantastic and there was so much of it! A race shirt I actually love. The post-race festival was a ton of fun and had good food and even free medal engraving. My friend ran the 11K, and despite her whole race being in the rain and having to wait for me to finish for hours, she still had a blast. If it weren’t so far away, I would definitely do it again.

UTMB Tarawera takes you through so many beautiful and unique areas of nature. Geothermal geyers, forests of ferns, redwoods, lakes, etc. It is absolutely gorgeous! And no chance of a snake or bear encounter in New Zealand. A good portion of the race was shaded as well. The race course itself was pretty moderate for a 50k trail race. The vibe of the race is exciting and supportive- it attracts big names due to UTMB, but they’re also encouraging to newer runners. The race was well organized, aside from a bit of congestion at some of the aid stations. I thought the race shirt and merch options were pretty good too. If you decide to do this race, book your hotel early. I did it quite late and it was hard to find something (and we couldn’t find anything with A/C!).

This race is exactly what I wanted- a full day immersion into the forest. Coming from Southern California with no forest, this was amazing. You don’t even need sunscreen because of the dense woods! But, it does mess with your mind after hours of single track in the woods, because you have no visual clues as to if you’ve made progress or how much is left. It is also a very peaceful race, because most of it is quite secluded. Beauty aside, this race was killer. It was VERY hilly (5,000ft of elevation gain). The first 8 miles are almost a single continuous uphill, which also means there is an 8 mile downhill at the end (fast, but ouch!). And there are many more hills aside from that. However, it was perfect running weather: started in the 40s and ended around 60 degrees. Aid stations were well stocked, and the race swag was a t-shirt, pint glass, and a medal!
