Grandma’s Marathon & Garry Bjorklund Half
Great race without too many issues

Okay, I’ll start by saying this is my first marathon (but I’ve done MANY races of shorter distances) so I don’t have other marathons to compare it to.
I had a great time. The course is hilly not flat, but is net downhill, and most of the hills (imo) are pretty small. My legs still started aching in the last 1-2 miles – whether this was due to the hills or if they would’ve anyways I’m not sure.
I heard there was almost no crowd support until Duluth (mile 19-ish) but there was more than I thought. Several stretches with lots of loud spectators. The crowds in Duluth, especially the last 3 miles or so, were OUTSTANDING!!! The aid stations were well stocked. They all had cups of ice and some had sponges. The maple syrup gels at mile 17 were life saving as was the pickle juice a little while later.
The bad… no big issues to complain of. But take note that the pacers started out HOT. At least 10 seconds per mile fast. I went with the 3:25 pacer and was wondering if we’d pad the 3:20 pacer…. But I never even saw that pacer. Others told me the 3:20 and 3:30 pacers also went out hot. Then, the 3:25 pacer didn’t make it past around 16 or so miles at 3:25 pace….
The wait for the bus to the start was about 40 mins. I didn’t expect that but that’s probably to be expected. The walk BACK to the return buses was about a mile and was very unclearly marked and sucked. I was very tired and kept hoping I was going the right way and kept asking for directions (which most people seemed unsure of). Then I had to wait on the bus for 15-20 mins while it filled and the radio was cranked loud…
Also the gear bag pickup was insanely long. They need more volunteers and pickup lines. Lastly I’d always read about the porta pottie lines as the start and people peeing in the woods. I thought they just couldn’t be that long and KNEW that wouldn’t be me. But I went to the lines for 20 seconds before I realized there was no way I was waiting bc I’d miss my start time so it was literally impossible – and I used the woods. If they want us to stop doing that, they NEED more porta potties!!! There’s a lot – but clearly not enough. Maybe 4 start corrals (they currently have 3) would be helpful too bc the corrals were insane….
All in all those things are fairly minor and I’d do it again!

I signed up for this race because it’s cheap, certified, and fairly close to where I live! I didn’t regret it. If I had one complaint it would be the lack of road closures – but tbh, I didn’t have an issue. There were police around the course / at all major intersections (which there really aren’t any major ones) and traffic cops for when you have to cross roads. I never had to stop at all – except to poop (🤭). There is only one porta potty RIGHT on the trail fyi – 2 or 3 more that you’d have to run ~10 seconds (each way) over to to use….
Plenty of volunteers at each turn, NEVER got confused on which way to go (and im prone to getting confused lol). As for swag there wasn’t much – hence why the entry fee was so cheap – but they cook everyone a full breakfast after (eggs, ham, bacon, pancakes etc!!!) as well as fruit, chips, various sports recovery drinks etc. very generous of them. As for the course difficulty, I was between a 3 and 4. For most I’d give it a 4 because it’s quite hilly!!! And I was very nervous, having driven the course beforehand and seeing all
the hills! But, I was prepared well, did hill training, and came out WAY better than expected.
Would do it again.

I ran this race in 2017 and 18. I had no issues for the most part. The course is mostly flat and goes through downtown mostly, and by the river briefly. There are LOTS of runners. But I still feel the course was long in 2018! I ran 19:47 in 2017, a 2 second PR. I did several other races and struggled to break that PR. Trained hard in 2018, was running 6:16 pace
(Not uncommon, tho I usually ended up fizzling out). With .05-0.6 to go, I was struggling SO hard, but managed to push through it, thinking of seeing the clock at 19:30 as I approached it…. NOPE! By the time I saw it, it was already in the 20’s! I was SO confused and disappointed!!! My watch did measure the course as long – and I wore the same watch both years, fyi 😕 for this reason, I won’t do it again – and I regret not finding a race to jump in 2-9 days after while my fitness was there, but oh well!!!
No other runners confirmed to me it was long fyi, but it had to be.

I did this race in both 2017 and 2018 (the 10 mile both years). I thought it was extremely well organized. Both years the weather was PERFECT (40’s) and the crowd support was AMAZING. The downhill last mile is the best. However, after the stint they pulled in 2023, I’m unlikely to do this race again. Yes hot races suck…. But let the runners themselves decide what they want to do!!! Lots of people spent a LOT of money, spent countless hours training for months on end, just for YOU to tell them they can’t do something? And the morning of to boot? I’d have been livid if I’d signed up for that race and my heart goes out to all the runners that were signed up. Ofc you offered them a free race the following year, but the money and time spent training was already lost 🙁

I ran this race twice – 2017 and 18 – but am
only reviewing once. I ran the 5k both years. In 2017 I broke 20:00 for the first time and was EXTREMELY happy (plus a little surprised) that I did so. I didn’t have a gps watch at the time but have since heard the course was likely short. In 2018 I had a watch and it was accurate, I also ran 2 seconds slower despite thinking I was for sure in better shape! Weather is hit or miss (was ~50 one year and 20’s the next). Running into the stadium at the end is the best part!!! I loved it. I don’t run for medals but everyone gets a nice big medal, and the long sleeve shirts were cool. The course is mostly flat and imo a little boring (but not the race organizers fault). Mainly you run down university, across a bridge and back and around the u of m campus a bit. There are LOTS of runners, so there’s always someone to run with / try to catch! I’d do it again but I feel the entry fee has increased to a beyond reasonable amount, and I’m cheap. 🤷♂️🤣

I did this race in 2017. Parking can be slightly tricky and the bathroom lines can be fairly long. The field is FAST. I gave the course a 1 star difficulty bc it’s flat and fast, but I personally died (bc I went out WAY too aggressively – my own fault 😅). I can’t remember getting too much swag, just a t shirt iirc. The weather can be hit or miss – it was comfortable when I ran it, but it can also be hot!!!
I’d do it again.
