This race is a must do for anyone looking to try out a different city marathon!
1. Getting to Cincinnati
First, I have never visited downtown Cincinnati before. Finding a hotel was easy as there are several options in the city and over in Covington, KY. I stayed at a hotel across the river and it was very easy to walk over to the start line in the morning. The city is full of people for the race and there is a bunch of events happening that make you feel really welcomed.
2. The Expo
The expo is one of the biggest I’ve ever attended and they don’t disappoint with the freebies. P&G has a lot of free samples, but I will say that if you attend the expo on Friday vs. Saturday, you are likely to get more as they started to run out Saturday afternoon. For running the flying pig you receive a lot of items (shirt, poster, commemorative gift – ours was a blanket) and there is the option to purchase A LOT more! (I purchased a ballcap that I LOVE).
3. The Course
The course is definitely harder of the two marathons I’ve done (I did Akron 2 years and then the Flying Pig is my third). Akron is hilly as well, but what makes the Pig a challenge is the 2.5 mile hill in the beginning. I definitely recommend taking this hill slow as once you get to the top at mile 8 – you have 18 more miles to go! so a lot of race left. One thing I want to note is that be prepared to not necessarily PR on this course – running a May marathon is challenging as if you are a Northerner like me (I live in Northeast Ohio), most of your training is done in the winter/snow. based on what people say, the Pig usually ends up being warmer/hot weather and this was the case for us – a starting temp of 55 degrees and ending temp in the 70s. Once again, not a negative at all! But I would just know this going into the race.
4. The Spectators
Crowd support is easily the biggest draw of this race. People are cheering, people are helpful, people are supportive, and people are EVERYWHERE! Not much more I can say about that – you just need to run the big yourself to see!
5. The Finish Swine
This year they changed the location of the finish and since this was my first time running the Pig, I can’t say too much about how it was before but I enjoyed the finish this time! It’s right between the two stadiums so it helps you to see the first stadium and know that you are close! Once you finish they have a nice finishing area that only runners can be in, and that’s where the snacks/pizza/medal area is. Once you exit you can meet up with family members (they have a reunion area) and then there’s a park right next to the river with a bunch of booths, grassy areas for sitting, live music, and of course – beer! If you stayed in a local hotel too and don’t feel like walking they have bus shuttles to take you wherever you need to go.

Overall, definitely a great race and one I would do again!

This was my 3rd time running the Canton Half out of the 5 years they’ve had the race. Overall this race has good things as well as bad with it – and most of the “bad” are due to the fact this race has only been around 5 years and is still working out some kinks.

The theme of the Canton half is fun – each mile marker is themed with a pro football hall of famer and you are able to finish in the HOF stadium which is brand new. Admission to the race also comes with a free entry to the HOF the weekend of the race which I definitely recommend taking advantage of.

In terms of the course, you are able to run through downtown Canton which has some pretty brick streets and buildings, as well as a park. A downside of this race is that besides a few spots, crowd support is pretty low so if you need a lot of people to keep you motivated this isn’t your race. The race has some hills but nothing terrible, and they have changed the race course many times due to construction (i.e. the HOF stadium was completed this year, so the course changed so we could finish inside) so I cannot say for sure that the course won’t change again.

the biggest draw of this race is the price. This year they ran a promo where registration was only $26.20 and you didn’t get the tech t shirt, but you still received the finisher medal and finisher blanket, as well as all the post-race perks (food, beer, etc). I literally don’t think you can find a half or marathon cheaper than that, and usually I don’t even like their t-shirts. The medals are usually really cool and creative – they play off the football theme, and I love the finisher blanket.

Overall this race is a great value and if you don’t mind the feel of a smaller half marathon then I don’t believe the drawbacks will bother you. They are still working out the best way to start the race/parking, as the past 2 years they’ve had to delay the start. My friends and I however have had no problems getting to the start as long as you leave early enough, and in the city of Canton you can park on any side street so when their was a line of cars to get in the parking we just pulled over and parked and walked – easy peasy!

The Akron marathon is one of the most well run races I have ever seen. The 2017 race was the 15th anniversary but you would think this race has been around way longer than that based on how organized everything is!

1. The Course
The course is challenging – it has a series of hills throughout the course and periods of flat running are limited. However the hills are spread out and mile 23-finish (with the exception of one small, steep hill) is basically all downhill. However this course does run through the prettier parts of Akron and takes you through downtown multiple times which makes it super easy for spectators to see you at the start and finish as well as a couple times in between.
2. The Spectators
The people in the Akron community love spectating this race! The later miles of the marathon run you through some nice neighborhoods north of Akron and the people that live there treat this race like a party! A lot of homes have large parties on the front lawns and cheer for everyone running by. In 2017, the race was extremely hot (by the time you finished it was in the 80s) so a lot of people were passing out extra waters, orange slices, snow cones, and so many people had their hoses out to spray you or sprinkler systems set up. The community makes this race honestly great because you are never really running alone on the course.
3. The swag
Akron always has really awesome shirt designs. This year they gave out quarter zips to marathon finishers which were by Asics and super nice, as well as a 15th anniversary hat to all participants. I also did this race as part of the Akron Race series, so when you finished the marathon you got a fourth medal (the three were from the 3 races of the series) and a super nice medal rack to hold all of them (and they are bringing that back for the 2018 race). The expo had a lot of giveaways as well and the opportunity to buy more themed gear if you wanted to.

Another great feature of this marathon is the guest elite runner they always have – they have had Meb and Kara Goucher in recent years and they usually run the 10-K so they are out there running with everyone! I can’t say enough good things about this race (which is why I’ve done it twice) – and even this year when I am doing a different fall marathon, I am planning on coming out to spectate because the energy of this day is so empowering. 10/10 recommend this race!
