The EnviroSports Facebook Team was super helpful in answering question for me last minute. That’s the best I can say about this race but it should be noted as a lot of groups these days aren’t readily available by email or FB as advertised.

I was excited to be headed to Death Valley for the first time~and for a race. I was looking forward to beautiful scenery and plants etc that was advertised in the race info. We chose to stay about 45 minutes outside of DV itself and drove in race morning. It was an easy and gorgeous early morning drive into DV that morning. Upon arriving at the Ranch, we picked up our bibs. After 100+ races…this is only the second race where I haven’t gathered my bib, shirt and any extras for purchase prior to the race. Apparently shirts (race swag) and hats available for purchase could only be gathered POST race. However, no one seemed to know where or that this was the case. I was also surprised to see that the race was not chip timed. More to come on that.

Pre race had everyone parking alongside a still open highway and crossing the street to a very unannounced start line. No “START” and no “line” or arch or ribbon. Suddenly, 8 min prior to race, a man started shouting a welcome speech. Mind you, cars are still whizzing by and people are still conversing because anyone over 15 ft away had no idea someone (the RD I’m assuming) was speaking. I was able to catch bits and pieces and then apparently a brief announcement of tradition to sing, “America The Beautiful”. That part was well, beautiful and a great touch but I wish I had known and others would’ve been quiet to enjoy. Then, without warning, the start of the marathon. People were still chatting toward the back and had no idea the start had “happened”.

In the 15 minutes prior to the half start~I attempted to converse with the lady that was unpacking shirts but she was too busy talking to a guy about her plans. When we finally were able to get her attention, we were instructed we had to wait til post race for shirts and hats. We just wanted to gather what we paid for and pack away in our car so as not to worry about it post race or for fear of forgetting. She had little time for us. We headed back to the groups of people waiting for the half start as well as the 10k start. We were talking with someone when all of a sudden people were running and others were shouting. Apparently, we missed our “start” as well. No gun, no noise, no music, just a “go” from someone toward the front at some point, I guess? So, off we went albeit late.

The race started to the side of the highway. For about 3/4 mile it follows a paved trail on left side of road. What the race info fails to share is that for the next two miles~it follows a weird mix of gravel/boulders/rocks that resemble tailings through Mustard Canyon. IMO, that Canyon is/was the best AND worst part of the entire race. The “trail” is terrible and multiple people were injured twisting ankles. I’m a trail runner and feel I’ve hiked and run just about everything including under water…and I was injured. Twisted both ankles and tore muscle in my right foot. At. Mile. 3! This upset me. Had I known about this “trail” difference rather than just the “paved trail” or “highway” mentioned~I would’ve simply chosen different shoes. Easy fix. However, the canyon rocks were gorgeous and were the ONLY and brief source of shade the entire run! So, good and bad. Confused at the strollers trying to go through the rocks when they supposedly weren’t allowed as well. Made for an interesting time.

Upon arriving at 3.1 miles is the first Aid Station/port a potties. It was great to be done with that horrible rock/thick gravel. The AS people were not very friendly. The AS offered Gatorade, water, trail mix, bananas and I think gummy bears but seemed pretty raided when we arrived. At this point, you’re running on highway. Road still open highway. Please follow the DO NOT USE HEADPHONES policy as we were nearly hit multiple times! It’s an out and back course for all distances so at some point, people are headed back at you…on a road still open highway! Park rangers drive by shouting at you like you’re stupid “stay on the white or beyond” meaning the white line near shoulder. BTW, the shoulder is that same soft, deep gravel on a slant uncomfortable to run on~so you’re left fighting for a space or chancing it with oncoming cars and runners trying to avoid the eyes of the park rangers. A couple people in front of us cheated by stopping at the AS right before the turnaround, sitting down and then heading back without continuing down to the actual half turnaround another 1/4 mile. While I wasn’t ever going to “place” it’s still unfortunate to see and know those people will place before you even after cheating. No one said a word to them. It had even been stated that even if you can’t make the time for the full…you’d simply be given a ride to “catch up” and allowed to finish. While I can appreciate that, it’s unfortunate for those actually completing it.

The mountains are gorgeous. I attempted several pics but after the first three miles it’s generally all the same. Same with the “flora and fauna” stayed. I honestly didn’t see the beauty and I was really excited for this trip, remember? There was one camera man at about mile 8 I’m guessing (because I only saw full markers) and he was literally just taking pics. Out of a car. There was no energy or cheers or life from any of the volunteers or staff that I saw. We thanked everyone we came into contact with and received grumbles or nothing back. Thats unfortunate when you’re in that kinda moment/race. The gentlemen that made the PRR race speech drove by several times waving and seemed cheerful but that was it. He seemed great but no one else caught my eye or made me think they were happy to have 300+ people paying to be there.

The weather was great. Beautiful. However, that desert sun is far different than regular sun if that makes sense? It was literally 73 and felt like 90+ by finish. I was intensely focused on hydration the weeks and days prior ~ and I was still hurting by finish. Two runners doubled over and I had to provide help which I am always happy to do (Medically trained) but the scary part was there was no one around to help or to call. I’m used to seeing medics (at least one or a presence). Because I was significantly hobbling/crawling and miserable near the last finishers…family members wondering where their family was were coming up to us asking if we had seen their people “down” anywhere in the canyon. I’d highly recommend a medic placement or at least a volunteer with a walkie talkie inside that canyon. I helped two by myself and had anything truly gone wrong that could’ve been very bad inside there! Know what you’re getting into before running anywhere but especially in the desert. I felt I was prepared. And even I was not.

The finish was uneventful. Granted, we were close to the last finishers but it was just a few cones and someone handing a small medal. No announcing, no “finish line”. Not a big deal but should be noted. I was not impressed with the medal nor the ribbon. I hate saying that because it really wasn’t and isn’t why I run but…this day in age…medals are so great and such a great chance to share/advertise your race and this one was just sad. I can appreciate the simplicity, if that’s what was intended. However, a nice ribbon advertising the race and date—would’ve substantially helped the cause and been little added cost! After gathering our medal, we walked a few feet to a small table of fruit/trail mix and water. The people were all too busy talking to each other to be bothered by runner trying to regain their whits post run. Same with the tshirt/hat lady. The tshirts had great artwork but it was on a basic Fruit of the Loom unisex T-shirt. Again, not the end of the world but worth mentioning. The hats for sale (that I was so excited about) were not the advertised hats so that was upsetting as well.

At this point, I hobbled off to my car and put my feet up disgusted with the whole thing. Again, beautiful mountains, friendly RD (it seemed although I couldn’t hear him), but the rest…meh. Remember, $130 a piece we paid. That’s a pricy half considering the distance 90% runners traveled and hotel costs (a lot of money to those hotels in DV was brought in). Then factor in lack of staff, items at AS (no gels or Ultima or Nuun etc) lack of energy, no chip timing, busy highway traffic, unannounced start/finish, safety, T-shirt and medal quality, as well as those allowed to cheat or not even finish and still be counted. I just had a difficult time with the end result of everything with a $130 half marathon price tag and that kills me for how excited I was and how beautiful I expected the course to be.

If I could suggest improvements: medal quality, safety precautions and organization would be my top three. Side note: both driving into Death Valley as well as leaving, we didn’t see any notifications to travelers that there was a race going on. We did see 1 sign posted on a port-a-potty ACROSS THE STREET from oncoming traffic suggesting CAUTION but that’s it. That’s a real problem. I believe a lot of travelers just didn’t know what was going on! it was scary on many miles of the race.

I’d also like to think that the price tag was hefty due to being in a National Park? However, in addition to the registration of $130 each for my husband and myself~runners are asked to pay an additional $10 fee to the park as well. Worth noting.

All distances within Contra Loma and Black Diamond Mines Regional Parks~gorgeous but super tough trails. First two miles gradual incline to “the wall”. Sharp uphill to a Ridge and then down for a mile or so. Then starting a rocky and sandy climb for 4+ miles on single track and dusty trails. Maybe 3 trees to shelter under for a drink. Lol. It’s usually blazing hotttt for this race, ranging from high 80s to 106-mostly in that latter area. Little to no shade on most parts. Where there is shade, it’s single track and covered in dense woods~with little airflow. It’s challenging to say the least. Will test your quads by miles 2 and 5! And the rest of you by mile 8!🤣 Expertly run by Brazen Racing with great shirts and medals. Hiker or early starts available. Not a good race for someone’s first trail half….IMO. But a great race and a fantastic challenge for someone looking!

My son won a free race entry to this race at the CIM Expo in December~and since he can’t drive yet…off we went to run Rock Tahoe. I loved the idea of staying in Tahoe, getting to sight see etc. However, rooms were at some points $500 nightly due to the event and a concert the same weekend. Make sure you make arrangements early!!! We stayed in Reno and drove up Race morning. Easy! Wasn’t ideal but was doable. Would’ve much enjoyed being able to stay local and enjoy festivities though. Anyway, back to the race itself. The expo is so small you mustn’t blink. They do a great job or organization though and bib pick up was easy and painless. Not much to buy to brag (meaning shirts, sweatshirts etc) What they did have basically only fit the typical runner body~oddly enough, the majority I saw didn’t fit that mold so I’m hoping they figure that out soon. Again, organized expo but seriously lacking. Race morning meant bus rides to Spooner Summit. About a 20 min ride. I wasn’t looking forward to what I figured would be a winding route to the top. (I get very carsick). It wasn’t!! There were plenty of buses. Easy parking at Montbleu or Hard Rock parking. Hop on the bus at your scheduled time and off ya go. Easy. Great atmosphere at the top. Although, for being named after Hard Rock…it seemed a bit weak energy wise. Announcer was good but other than that just your typical pre race blah. There’s an early start for back of the packers. I enjoyed this. However, pay attention to the “penalty boxes”. These are areas Back of Packers can’t pass before the lead runners go through. They are real! The first 3 miles or so are downhill. However, there are some uphills and rollers and even a significant couple uphills. While it’s not exactly like scaling Mt diablo or Mt Tam…it is work when you’re at elevation and sleep deprived and it’s HOT!! Not to mention when you’re expecting all downhill!!!! This frustrated me. Also, the entire course minus a couple last miles are on a very very VERY busy highway going into Tahoe. Only one lane is shut down. It’s busy! So, no headphones. And yes, it’s dangerous at points. The AS are setup at great intervals BUT most only stocked with that yellow Nuun and water as well as some orange slices. However, mile 9s AS rocks with alcohol and other goodies if you’re into that sorta thing. If not, they’re also the most energetic and friendly with great music!! I struggled here with food poisoning and the heat and constant rollers. I just couldn’t get any pace going for myself. Maybe it was the elevation too but it just wasn’t a good time for me. I finished well well WELL over my projected. But, I finished. The last three miles or so are odd. The route veers off into a “bike route”. I didn’t pay attention to that on the course map so I had one vision in my head and it was wrong. This made my last three miles hell. This “bike route” was paved and went through a lil camping area and upstairs and hills and down through meadows then thru town. Odd! Then, instead of finishing in front of HR Hotel…the course winds behind the hotel and down the street to the backside of the hotel to finish. Again. Odd. The finish line announcers were present even at my late arrival which I was thankful for. (In my defense, a good amount of time was spent helping several injured runners and one gal who blew out her knee right in front of me!) There were a few snacks left at my finish and I’m very thankful for the guys manning the water bottle pool that threw extra water bottles at my hubby and I as we finished. Love the water bottles too! Keepers! Post race festivities for me were meh. I’m not a beer drinker so a few of the tents were not for me. I’m not one for feeding my face post race with huge sandwiches or alcohol so that really wasn’t any interest. The clothes for sale were the leftovers from expo in size small and smaller. The best part of the post race for me was the chance to buy an organic fruit popsicle. Lol. Those were great! The medals and shirts were superb!!! The sling pack was ok. It doubles as your gear check bag with blanks on it to fill in your bib number with marker which I thought was genius. Other than all that I was just happy to get in my car and head back to Reno to relax in the hotel and go out to the BBQ street fair that night!

We flew into Memphis from California. We arrived late on Friday so we missed the expo. If you fly in and plan on Uber-ing to millington….think again. In a city of 1.2 million…there was ONE driver available to get us to the race at 5am! Beware! I would’ve appreciated a note on that u fee the race website or something. The ladies at bib pick up, race morning were very helpful and kind. There is NO gear check and bags are NOT allowed on base~~~no hydration packs either and it’s HOT. I do not understand the no gear check thing. I guess if you have a car, you can leave items in car but it’s quite the walk to parking unless you get there early. The production seemed to be strong from the morning on. Not much “NAVY” to do with anything which saddened me as my son wanted to do this race for that fact alone. The base we ran through was basically residential housing and don’t blink or you’ll miss it. The course is flat and boring but nothing can help that. Not much shade and it’s HOT and HUMID this time of year! There was a Navy water bottle and some sponsored items in the sling pack provided that were cool. The medal was great! The finish had ample 4hr timing but per the usual was lacking energy the later it got~again, not much can be done about that BUT the expo food had somewhat closed and other shops inside hangar were closing well ahead of four hour mark. So, there’s that. A great shirt was provided. Overall, it’s a race to do once. Proceeds go to a great cause in helping support the area’s Naval community. That was the best part of the whole thing. Can’t go wrong there.

This race is part of Brazen Racing’s Ultra Half Series. There is a reason for that🤣 I have done the 5k here many times but decided to try the half this year. O. M. G! The bib pick up is smooth. The people are amazing. It is run fantastically well. I’m slow and hike/jog/run depending on how I’m feeling as of late. Because of this, I take their “Early Start” for hikers. This course is NO joke. 50 yards out of the start you’re starting uphill on trail. Immediately, it’s very scenic. We saw fox, cows and 6 deer in the first mile. This course is full of hills and false summits and the uphill start really challenged my leg strength/mental game for the back half of the race. If you can make it to mile 7 or so, the views are stunning. And…if you can make it through the steep decent around mile 9 or so~~you’re rewarded with hills and more hills worth of burn! But…that also means some of the most gorgeous views I’ve ever seen!! You can see for miles~~all the bridges of the Bay Area, SF, Oakland..etc etc. Gorgeous!! It’s def a race worth doing…but train for those hills cuz they just do. Not. Stop. 🤣

The races changed this year from being spread across two days to having them all on one day. I chose the HM with a 5k chaser. The bib pick up is fairly smooth, although parking can be a bit challenging if the Sharks are playing games. I find the people of RR I’ve come in contact with to be a bit snooty/misinformed/uninformed. I ran last year as well as well and saved my review on that for this year to give ample time but nothing’s changed. The parking for race day is ample and mostly free. The course runs through town and back to SAP Center which is nice. Not much really sticks out about the on course aid—fairly basic. Back of packers may find this annoying but some stations were closing. Energy at finish line was great. Kinda cool to see Meb. Shirts/bag with HM are neat but you def pay for it in the registration.

This year the itinerary was changed a bit. Last year, the races were over two days. This year, all the same day. I chose the half marathon this year with the 5k soon after. The 5k is a simple 3.1 miles through town near the SAP Center. Parking was easy~as was bib pick up. Easy course but most everything was packed up and vendors left before some were even finished with their race. Wasn’t much left for people to do after the 5k race.

The Hangar itself is great. However, it’s at roughly .75 into the run. From that point on~~not much to see. Numerous AS avail with water. Quoted a lengthy time limit of 4.5 hrs which is great but several AS were abandoned at least @ 3 hr mark. Two Portos avail on course. 🥴 Finish line water/fruit closed up at 3.5 hour mark. Which is fine if you dont state a 4.5 hour limit. Felt sorry for those finishers. Overall I think running through the Hangar is unique and you should do it at least once. Otherwise, the charity donation is the best part of the race.

Very, very small expo–but easy to get to and pick up bibs! Shuttles were great and parking was easy. Amazing morning scenery of the Superstition Mountains. Course was flat, mostly with some gentle rollers. Great aid stations/volunteers. Looong stretch of road to the turn around that had my mind wondering–so I just focused on the amazing cacti and coyotes running amok. Overall, Id say everyone should do this race once–then after you relax for a bit—go visit the Hole in the Rock and maybe hike the trail not far from the turnaround! Its beautiful!!

It’s beautiful to see the ocean and beach but the wind and weather can be bad this time of year. Parking wasn’t a problem. Great finish line announcer! Not a fan of their shirts though. Good medal. Would appreciate the AS people staying at their stations for ya back of the packers. Not to mention the finish line food/merchandise area!!

Golden Gate park+Ocean Beach with a side of Buffalo. 😎 Ever changing scenery. Yummy chocolate. Shuttles are easily navigated. Expensive race (plus parking and shuttle) unless you get in a year early. Loooong Ocean Beach stretch so be prepared for that. Weather can be challenging and may alter course or distance. Expo is decent.

Mt Diablo in the fall is a challenge. Has it been dry or wet? The course will vary between dry trail and sloppy mud/overgrown weeds given recent weather. AS support is great. There are AS cutoff times so be aware. The half goes on at same time as a 30k to the summit so watch your ribbons/signs. Miles 4-8 are uphill and exposed. 8-10 downhill. If it’s been a wet fall (not often) there can be up to 25 creek crossings! I prefer the spring version, the Diablo Trails Challenge. There is a 50k going on as well at that one. And it is usually wet. Well run with great medals and T-shirts

Barren land~no shade~hot time of the year~full of unrelenting hills. Definitely a challenge, even for seasoned runners~so I’m told. Great volunteers and expertly run. Carry your own fuel/hydration. The AS support is great but due to heat here AND the inability to get further in for another AS..it is a bit of a stretch between AS! Would not recommend as a first time half trail race! Great shirts and medals as well as volunteers!!

Nighttime trail run in the headlands. Headlamps galore lighting up the trail for our 15k. Took 2/3 of my boys as well as the hubby. They all had fun. New experience for us. I’d suggest multiple lamps. One headlamp didn’t do it for us but being newbies we didn’t know any better. Heard and saw lots of wildlife and amazing views atop the hills. Could’ve used another layer so go prepared. Lots of coyotes near the finish that ran in with us and several other runners—no harm done~seem to be staples of the area. Take a friend and have some fun. I don’t think I’d want to do it alone. We didn’t see but one person at the finish line that tossed us a medal..which was surprising given the multiple races going on. Hs some trouble with ribbons toward the end but another lamp may have remedied that problem. Overall it was fun and a new experience.

Nationally known~starting at Stinson Beach. Do yourself a favor and get there a day or two early and stay the night. Driving up in the morning can be a pain and really bites if you get car sick! You start by the beach and before you’re even .2 into your race, you’re headed uphill onto the famous Dipsea Trail! This trail is gorgeous but oh so challenging. The race is setup to be a handicapped race. A limited number of runners are allowed. Earliest starters =oldest. To win, you have to pass every single person that went off in front of you! Most areas are single track with traffic headed both ways. Stunning ocean views. Amazing wildlife. 600+ Dipsea stairs. Steady climbs up hills names Insult and Cardiac are not misnamed. Time cutoffs in effect for each AS. But to be able to say you did it=priceless. Rewards are huge medals, a patch, a T-shirt and gorgeous scenery and wildlife. With a beach finish chaser. Stinson beach to Mill Valley and back!! The waters cold and oh so perfect to soak those piggies post race!!! Amazing race with amazing people!

Beautiful scenery along the bay. Flat-ish course with a few rollers. Expertly Run with great medals and shirts that you actually want to wear. Options of tech or cotton. Brazen Racing also allows for a hiker division so if you’re not a rabbit or don’t love the stress of cutoffs…this is the racing group for you!! Several races at various times of the year for Brazen are held on this course which has paved road as well as trails along the water. Try one!

I participated in the Half Relay with my then, 13 year old. The relay has an easy exchange point and is flat and fast minus “Mt Modesto”-LOL. Ran with my husband and then 12 year old. Beautiful run along the bay on a flat-ish course. For the 6 hr relay, the teams basically run 5k loops as many times as they can. In the last hour, a smaller loop opens so you can add distance without having to go out on the big loop (if not fast enough to make it back in time). Exchanges are easy.
