This was my first half marathon, so I was pretty nervous, but I’m in the state for work for a few months and I figured, “why not?”.
The expo was kinda small and boring. I’ve seen bigger expos for 10K races. But, whatever.
Parking was good and the bus to get there was full of upbeat and friendly folks. It was very cold that day, was I was pleasantly surprised that they had a heated tent set up for race participants. Very welcome. I found a spot on the ground and chilled out.
Before the race, the bathroom line was long, but that seems to be par for the course at these things, so I allowed myself time to go before the gun.
The only problem I had was right before the gun, trying to find the correct pacer. I could find every other time, except the 2 hour time. A small group of about 4 of us formed and just decided that we would pace each other. So, I ended up making new friends. I know this is not the fault of the race organizers, but this really was annoying minutes before the gun.
The course was mostly flat and fast. It’s about 2 miles of road before you get to the trail, which is almost totally flat and made up of pee gravel. It’s actually pretty fast and nice to run on.
If I was back in NC during this time frame, I’d definitely do this race again.

I live in Tempe, so I thought getting to the race would be a breeze. I even inquired at information at the expo about where to park. However, when trying to get there, all the roads to the parking were closed with no one from race staff available to help direct people, so I parked pretty far away.
The race went well, but as it was one of my first real races, I was a little shocked by the hills. That’s really on me though, as I don’t think I properly prepared by studying the race course as well as I should have.
The finish line was a bit of a disappointment though. My wife tried to go there to cheer me on, but told me later that it was blocked off and she couldn’t figure out where to go to actually spectate. It was blocked off to people cheering basically.
Then I had to walk back to my car nearish the start line. That was horrible as it was a 20 min walk…
I’m registered for the 2024 half marathon as I’ve decided to give it ONE more chance. Hopefully, they fix these issues.
