The picture for this race was with 2 of my daughters and myself. I ran the race with the red head since it was her first 1/2 marathon. It was my other daughter’s 3rd state and second time with me so she did it on her own! The notes below are based on the conversations with them as well as my wife and youngest daughter who volunteered.

Race Bib Pick up: This was well planned out. Even with almost 2000 runners, we waited very little time in getting through and picking up the bibs/ race swag. I think we were in line no more than 5 minutes from the time we arrived until we got the final items.
Race Expo: It was fun but it was a little underwhelming. The daughters had expected more – especially my oldest who has run in a couple of other races. That said, this is a small community and is understandable that more wasn’t available. Anything needed as last-minute supplies were available.
Official Race store: There was a variety of interesting items. Our favorites was the TShirts with all the names listed of participants (I love the fact I have something with my daughter’s names on it!) and the patches/ stickers. Costs were about on part – though the older race shirts were more expensive than expected.
RACE DAY:
Arrival: There was stress with getting parked the morning of the half marathon. Parking seemed to take a while. We left at 5:15am from our condo 3 miles away. We did not get parked until after 5:45am. We had been told the last bus left at 6am, so we were stressing. Maybe having 2 entrances to park might have made this smoother – but then again, not a lot of places to park outside the area they were at. Lots of port a potties – but the line was still extremely long at the start line. Highly suggest runners arrive sooner and use them at the finish line where busses pick up. Good news – no issues with toilet paper running out!
The race: The course is beautiful. Aid stations were plentiful with multiple port a potties for use at most of the stations. I prefer the water jugs than all of the paper cups and with other races would adopt this method. We did find it interesting that they were giving out “door prizes” at the start line. Most runners would have to carry them throughout the race.
Might want to think about that and have them with the ticket numbers at the end for the runners to pick up? We had expected there to be more hills, but none of them really felt terrible (mile 4, mile 7/8 and near the end were the worst but even those were manageable!) The main complaint was that the road had a bad tilt to it in the curves – and there are a lot of curves. You really had to pay attention more to the road and where you ran vs trying to race efficiently. It was noticeable when you got to an area that was flat as it felt so much better to run on. There were gels at every station (2 flavors of Honey stinger – Acai and Gold). My oldest really liked the Gnarly sports drink and plans to use that in the future if she can find it. The oranges were a blessing.
Race Finish: The last small hill seemed cruel and unusual punishment. Since it had been raining, coming down the other side of it was a little slippery due to the surface. Food at the end was nothing spectacular (bananas, snack boxes with trail mix/ popcorn/ etc). Post race activities was also very minimal. I stuck around to help at the finish with my youngest but there was not much else beside awards.
Race medal (s): We only ran in the 1/2 and was impressed with the size of the medal. We were a little envious of the Double medal as that design was pretty cool (though the cost to add the 5K onto the 1/2 was a little more than expected). We did decide to at least do one double if we do anymore VR races.

Overall, the race was the main feature. The pre race and post race items are nice to have – especially for a destination race. However, I would prefer to have a well thought out course and well ran race than the fluff. We are already looking forward to additional races.

Pre/ Post race – It is a small town race. Parking was easy to find and not a lot of runners. Bib pick up was easy and post race activities were fun (there was a farmers market in the area which was nice.
Race: Not a lot of port a potties – but we made due. Running through the park was nice and the Renactors were a great addition. Nothing like running past a group of civil war people fighting it out! No issues with Aid stations – they were spread out. Some hills, mostly in the park but nothing that killed us!
Medal/ Swag: We loved the design and size. It was pretty cool and kept with the theme of Civil War.

It rained, a LOT during the night before and day of the race. Good news was the pavilion that was near by the start line to stay warm and dry before going out to run.
Pre race/ bib pick up was a breeze. The organizers did their best to keep spirits up despite the rain.
Race: I loved the course. There were hills – including going up and over a bridge . The wind made the bridge difficult and demoralizing. However, there was someone at the summit of the bridge that was cheering everyone on and made it seem not so bad! Race support was good. Loved the overall race.
Post race – Probably the best part – Loved the shrimp boil as part of the food!! Swag was decent – Loved the medal. Shirt was good quality.

Overall a great experience and want to go back and experience it when it is nice weather!

You would think, after 10 years of running races, I would know better. I had the bright idea that running a half marathon downhill would be the best decision ever. I was WRONG! I was not prepared for miles of downhill running.

I chose to run the Lake Tahoe Marathon weekend. This series has a lot of varying distances to intrigue anyone. 3 half marathons, 3 full marathons and one crazy distance around the entire Lake Tahoe. Pick your poison well 🙂

Both this race and the Nevada race were the same. They are run by the same person that does the Maui Oceanfront. His communication is spot on and very informative. Not always on top of responses to questions (at least for Maui), but I had no issues for the Lake Tahoe series. He gives recommendations to places to go and stay, though I cant always afford where he recommends. We found that the Casino that was recommended to stay at was dicey in regards to conditions and reviews of the hotel were off. We found a place a couple of blocks away that had a hot tub and was nice (except for using the stairs!)

Pre Race/ Packet Pick up: Packet pickup for this race was at the casino. It was a little delayed and lots of people were in line due to all the races. It did take some time to get through the line to get what I needed. (The Nevada race had packet pick up at a local Running store on the Thursday – so it also made for a little confusion)
Race: This race is the Sunday race in the weekend, so it was my 2nd one in 3 days. It is best to have them bus you to the start line as there is no parking at the top. One good point, there are flush toilets at the park near where we started. However, since there were only 1 per gender, plan ahead and try to go with enough time to get to the start. People had to rush to the start line (many guys just went into the woods – but I prefer not to do that…) The views were amazing while waiting for the start of the race. The start line…. OMG!! We were all getting pictures of the views as we started the race. The first 3 miles of the race is all downhill – with switchbacks due to how steep it was. No issues with traffic as (I think) the road was closed where we were at. Once at the bottom of the mountain, it leveled out and ran through some beautiful areas. Lots of nature! No sightings of bears while running through the parks – but they were there as we had seen them around while just doing touristy stuff. Plan accordingly! The final 3 miles or so was running through South Lake Tahoe – not bad, but not as beautiful as the start. The finish was amazing as you enter through the back of the park in South Lake Tahoe and finish steps from the beach. The water was cold – but I saw quite a few people walking into the water to enjoy the cold. The race support was good – no issues with running out of supplies (I was in at the 2:30 mark, so many of the runners had already finished by the time I did…)
Post Race – there was decent food items, though I had things in the car that I knew I would want. We got a chance to walk around and there was a little entertainment at the finish.
Race Swag: This series does have some serious swag. The medals are awesome (all similar with slight variations due to the races). The big thing was the Tito’s race duffle bag. It was given out at the casino with the other races – but that bag is awesome. Probably one of the best things to be given (besides the Brooks running jackets I got elsewhere) and something I still use today to go to the gym – and any smaller trips! I think there was a shirt, but maybe not…. I cant remember and I never wear it if there was 🙂

Overall, I highly recommend doing both the Emerald Bay and Nevada half races – especially if you plan to do the 50 states. You will not be disappointed!!

Took my wife to Hawaii for our 25th anniversary but postponed the trip to coincide with this race (those running for all 50 states would understand!)
Pre Race/ Bib pick up: It was a breeze. We stayed in Maui about 2 blocks from the pick up (unfortunately, it is all gone now due to the fires there). Walked over and was able to get what we needed without issue. They had extra past race shirts available for cheap so I picked up the other designs.

Race: It was an out and back course along the shore. The locals cheering on were great along with the music and fun atmosphere. Timing is also good to see whales (saw a couple while on the route since you see the ocean the entire time!) Support was good and no issues with aid stations.

Post race/ swag: The medals are absolutely beautiful. The shirts are nice (but I was not a fan of white shirts – just not my fav color but I understand due to the design on the shirts). Love and still run with the racing hat that I bought while there.

If you get a chance, take the cruise with the race director. It is well worth it. My wife and I loved getting the chance to cruise with other runners as well as seeing whales many times while on the trip. Overall, loved the course and hope to go back sometime and see how Maui recovers from the awful fires in the area! (My profile pic is from that trip to Hawaii while on Maui!)

I loved running this course. It is a smaller race (about 900 in 2018) but well ran.
Bib Pick up / Pre Race Expo – It was an easy task to get the bib and the expo had what you needed for the race.
Race: The race itself was beautiful. It is a point to point course running on a back road (bay side of the island). Even though it was hot that weekend, we were under shade for 90% of the course so it stayed cool. About 1/2 way, the paved road turned to a dirt path. The only bottle neck was the single hill on the course- basically a course person pointed uphill on a path covered in pine needles and sand. It was single file so anyone running got the path while those walking up stepped off for them to pass. Final mile or so was in the sandy/needle type terrain with the finish being a sandy downhill run. We were told by locals that they all watch the finish line (really the only spot for them to cheer you on) not to see who finishes but to see who does a face plant in the sand coming down the hill!
Pacers/ run support was great. Post race activities were a lot of fun.

Overall- wife and I had a great time and stayed locally in a small hotel on the beach. This is one of the races I would love to do again given the chance!

This is the race for you if:
1) You like lots of runners (20+K )
2) You dont mind waiting to start – they suggest you are there well prior to the event starting. I think it was 3:30am, race started at 7am. If you are unfortunate to be in the last corral – you wont get to the start line until 8am.
3) You are not running for a PR (unless you are in the first corral that is). 20,000 runners on a path made for 3-4 people means lots of congestion. In addition, lots of runners stop to get on rides once in the park or stop every mile to get pictures with characters.
For me, I will never run another Disney race. The amount spent vs the race was just not there. Yes, it was fun to see characters and to see so many people in the race. The swag was the best part – medals are awesome and the shirts were great. However, it was a one time event.
We stayed on resort as part of vacation so we got a shuttle to the starting area. Restrooms were not an issue. Honestly, I don’t remember the aid stations Pre race activities and Expo were top notch. I did not participate in any post race activities (don’t think there were any…)

This is a smaller local race (267 back in 2010). The shirt is nice and I still wear it and the medal is decent – though I did not know it at the time (it was my first race).
The race itself is an out and back course. Remember that this race is in March in PA – so the weather is always iffy. In my case, we had strong headwinds for half of the course and driving rain. There were also moderate hills so it was a challenge.
The best part is that the race is cheap – $35 if you get it timed right. Community support is good and aid stations were well placed. However, I have only volunteered for this race as I vowed to not run it again (I don’t like running in rain, cold, wind :).
