I’ve run lots of races, but this was my first time to try this one and I highly recommend it. Kinston is a relatively small town, but the Ironclad Race Teams puts on a big city race. Registration was easy and Amy, the race director, was very responsive to email inquiries. “Day of” packet pick-up was fast and easy with a nice swag bag and well designed tee. The start was unique with a cannon shot. The course was fast and flat. It was well marked with deputies or police at all major intersections and lots of volunteers at smaller intersections or just along the course to cheer you on. Aid stations were well-spaced. The finish on the track inside the baseball stadium was a great touch. As one volunteer said, that finisher’s medal could double as a dinner plate! Post-race food was exceptional: lots of snacks, as well as mac n cheese, BBQ, hot dogs, ice cream sandwiches and beer. Overall, a well-organized and well-executed event.

Trails were beautiful but a bit more challenging than I expected. All of those falling leaves covered the rocks and roots that one tends to trip over!
The hoodie was exceptionally nice and low-key – no advertising billboard on the back.
I’ve never attended a race before that provided a “night before” pasta meal as well as a “pre-race” breakfast. Quite a treat for that to be included in the registration.
Chris, the race director, was extremely responsive to questions before the race – that’s always an important factor in my decision to participate.
And, the sense of community – as with all trail races – is wonderful.
I was a DNF this year because I did thought (erroneously) I was rested from the previous week’s 40K. Not. But I’ll be back to try this one again.

This is always a well-directed, well-organized and enjoyable race. I’d done the half marathon a few times and upped it to the 40K this year. Cut off times are generous and Libby and Rich (race directors) take extremely good care of their runners. Pre-race info is thorough. Trail is quite scenic – most of it is easy to moderate with a couple of short but challenging sections.

With good reason, this race maxes out quickly. Beautiful trails, excellent post-race party, nice swag, very reasonable price, and smooth direction and production.
You can choose your “trail name” for your bib or take your chances and let them assign you one. I met Stinky Bottom and Mustang Sally. Let them assign you a name at your own peril. You’ll see their wonderful sense of humor throughout the race emails and website.
