The expo was easy: getting my bib took 30 seconds. The vendors were good and I was able to meander–some races force you to follow a path, but this was open.
The aid stations were well-manned with adequate supplies, and at several stations the volunteers addressed me by name (from my bib) and offered encouragement! The water wasn’t cold, and it was in a gravity-fed system which made it hard for them to fill my bottle. On the positive side, the first aid stations had coolers with ice, so when I figured that out I asked for a few pieces or a small bag of it whenever I could.
The weather brief was insufficient. We should have been told that when conditions went extreme that we were supposed to walk, but that info was posted to Facebook during the race. Who checks Facebook during a race??
I was one of the 200 or so who were taken off the course early due to extreme heat. It was disappointing to not be able to finish, but the organizers handled it as professionally and courteously as they could have. I was still able to run through the finish line and receive a medal, and was comped next year’s race fee, so those were both nice. (I don’t think I’d be willing to run it again if it weren’t for those two perks.)
