I run because I can. When I am injured, I miss running so much – my last injury cost me 6 weeks of total down time and it is good to be back on the road. Running is great for heart health, weight control, feeling free, emotional health, etc. I hope to race until I die.

This is a very well run race that is flat and fast for the most part. There is one 180 degree switchback turn at the 2.6 mile mark that will slow you down, especially if you are in a bunch of runners. Otherwise, the race is great, the management is professional and the pre-race and post race festivities are fun. The medals are outstanding and the awards include both age groups and Masters. If you are in Myrtle Beach in October, this is a fun race!

I have run in this race several times, always as part of a corporate team in the Corporate Challenge. This is a USATF certified and chip-timed course that is very professionally produced. There are typically 2,000+ runners in this race. You will need to train on hills if you don’t want to have a bad time – the first 1/2 mile is about 80 feet of elevation change, all up, and it can take the wind out of your sails for the balance of the next 2.6 miles. The middle part of the course is small rolling hills and then you get the 80 feet of downhill elevation change at the end. This is a big event, it is the day before the Medtronic Marathon on the Sunday following this Saturday race. There is a lot of fanfare and it is fun, with hundreds of spectators along the course. If you are in the Twin Cities area around early October, you should think about this race!

This is a fun mid-summer race, although it is warm and humid which will slow you down. You should plan on adding 30-60 seconds to your fall race time, especially if you are a Masters runner. The race starts and ends at the park and winds through downtown Shallotte. The fire department and police department both make a big deal out of this July 4th timeframe race, with big American flags and the national anthem. This is a VERY patriotic race and town. The medals and awards are great and it is a good time.

This is an amazing race with several thousand runners from many surrounding states. It is a USATF certified and chip-timed event, flat and fast with only a few easy turns and a very fast downhill finish if you are looking for an 8K PR. The race has a negative elevation change of 120 feet from the start to the finish. The race itself is fun but they do not have a medal ceremony for awards after the event – you have to wait to get your award mailed to you after the fact. Overall, this is a great race!

This race is epic in size, visuals, experience, challenge and scope. There are over 20,000 runners in this race every year and over a dozen corrals based upon your expected finishing time. The course is USATF certified and chip-timed. If you have not done hill training before this race, you are in for a world of hurt, as the 3rd mile is entirely up hill at about a 5% grade. I am a very experienced racer and this hill kicked my butt even after training on it for a couple of months. Once you get to the top, and you have a couple of miles downhill, you would think it is easy but you are tired from running up the hill and it is not so much. Once you get to the finish line, the party begins, and there is a lot of free food, water, etc. This race was more of a bucket list item for me than something I would like to run every year – a little too tough for me! Enjoy!
