This was my fourth half marathon and I was hoping to try for a personal best. I knew going in that there would be some hills, but man o man. Talk about the hills! I’m normally a hill lover, but these were my enemy. Thankfully you get most of them out of the way in the beginning and can settle into a good pace.
The weather was perfect! Nice SF mist and fog that then rolled out to expose the beauty of the city. Running the Golden Gate is an experience in itself and a highlight of the race.

The streets downtown are not the best, had to pay a lot of attention for potholes and rocks. But once you make it toward Piedmont, it gets a little more even. And then there’s the hill. Not a bad hill by any means, but when you’re hitting mile 7 and in your stride, you think you can just charge through like nothing. Then you realize you still half way to go…
Running around Lake Merritt was a highlight, and the weather was perfect. Only suggestion would be bathrooms. Hard to locate them.

It had rained the days leading up to the race as well as on race day. The grounds are mostly mud/rocks and therefore you had to be more aware of where you were stepping. I was a little frustrated that many walkers/slower paced joggers started at the front of the pack, making it more of a weaving game for the first half mile. They had a bag of pork rinds in the finishers swag which was disappointing. I’m sure if the weather were a little nicer, the amazing scenery would have made up for all the negatives

The course is beautiful, starting off in downtown, taking you through Sycamore Grove and past wineries, and ending back where it began. 8am start time went smoothly and there is enough room for all runners/walkers.
