I looked forward to the egg rolls the most. Not sure if it’s because I’m Chinese or just because I love egg rolls, but that is a favorite for me!
The course is easy to follow, and in roughly a figure 8. Loops are mentally challenging for me. 10 miles to go? Easy. But 4 loops to go?? Oh no!
The RDs and the volunteers are wonderful and their swag is the best! I’ll definitely return to either run or crew (or both).

Flat and fast. A pretty nice little expo for a 5K/10K/10mi race. The course for the 10K was a little short (even shorter last year, I think). But I think it’s due to the fact that it’s hard to make the turnaround work with the medians on PCH at the appropriate spot.
Nonetheless, I feel the race was good overall.
The weather was great again this year, even a little bit drizzly to keep the temperature cool.
I love the shirt and the medal, especially for a shorter race distance.
I will be back next year!

This was my 9th outing in a row at Long Beach. I also paced the 5:25 group last year, which was a struggle because of the heat. This year it was much better, although it did start to get warm at the end.
The course volunteers were great and the aid stations were always stocked when me and my group went through. Flat and fast and an overall enjoyable day for me. I’ll be back in 2017!

This was my fourth time running the LA Marathon, but it was by far my best experience ever. I love the shirt this year (so much better than me receiving a MEN’S large shirt by mistake, and not noticing until after the race was over). The volunteers are wonderful and there are so many sights to see (if you’re into that). I followed the 4:30 pacer for the majority of the race and she was enthusiastic and great.
The only thing that I found troubling was the corrals. I was in corral D. As it got closer to the race start, there were runners scaling the chain link fence and ignoring the volunteers directions not to do so. I read in the final directions that it was possible for people to be DQ’d for doing things like this. I don’t know why it’s written if it’s not going to be upheld. There were a few people that were almost going to fall and break something! I noticed this time that after the barrier were removed once my wave/corral was moving up that the volunteers were holding up a rope to separate the two waves. But I never really noticed when or why that wasn’t held onto until we actually started. Why does this matter to me? Because once the rope was let down, there was (and always in every other LA Marathon I have run) a mad rush of people PUSHING and SHOVING their way up to get closer to the front. The worst part of it all is that they are often unapologetic and simply wanting to move up. Why bother saying that they have to be in the open corral (or their own) if after a while they merge them all together before the start anyways?
Other than this, which was all at just the beginning of the race, everything was GREAT. I had my best experience ever, for multiple reasons. I will definitely run this again!

This is my 8th year in a row running Surf City (the first 5 were halfs and the last 3 were fulls). I also ran the race once when it was still the Pacific Shoreline Half. I love this race and I love the course. The weather is almost always perfect; but can get warm later in the morning for the full marathoners, like it did this year.
But the race still doesn’t disappoint. It begins with a really great Expo and packet pick up (who doesn’t love their awesome reusable tote bags??) and a quality race shirt. I helped out at the OC Marathon booth this year for a couple hours, so I got to hang around and see quite a few people come up that also really enjoy this race. It’s part of the Beach Cities Challenge, the Double Dog Dare and the California Dreaming series. You can’t beat having all those options for different challenges to complete!
Race morning went smoothly for me again, but I think I may be lucky as I had VIP Parking. I arrived with plenty of time to spare in the morning, getting into the parking lot just before 5:30 am. The traffic wasn’t too bad then, but I’m sure it got worse as time got closer to the half marathon. I previously only ran their Half Marathons, but 3 years ago they instituted an earlier start time for the full marathoners. That was enough to get me to say YES. There are far fewer runners for the full, for obvious reasons, so that’s where I chose to be. Although some people complain about the “big hill” it’s really not bad at all, especially compared to some other local races. The Pacific Ocean is right there right next to us, for crying out loud! =) There was a great breeze coming in, which really helped with the warm temperature. Course support was great as well. Lots of volunteers and the ease at which spectators could see the runners at multiple times during the race from one area really helps too, I think.
I would say though that the toughest part of the course is when we have to turn around and go back down onto the beach path before mile 16. I, personally, don’t mind that. I run that path often. I like being close to the water and having the ocean breeze. Yes, we do have to turn back at around mile 20 and make the 10K run back to the finish line. But I go in knowing that and I’m ok with it.
Now, the medal. Have you seen the medals?! They are awesome this year. A spinning surfboard medal that even has a little kickstand so you can set it on the counter to display and show off to your friends. How cool is that??
Every year I am going to run on Super Bowl Sunday…and I know that I won’t be feeling too guilty about what I eat and enjoy after the race because I RAN THE BEACH~

This was my first time at this race, and participated as the 12:00 pacer. It was great! Onto disappointment was the mile markers seemed to be off as we returned after the halfway point, which threw me and my pacing partner off. We were consistently hitting our intended pace until the mile markers came up sooner than we expected.
But I guess it’s better short than long. 😉
Fun, easy, flat, out and back. Great medal and shirt for just a 10k. Great support and swag 🙂
