Fairly no frills event, with a small expo, little swag, ordinary medal, and not much in the way of post-race amenities. The Mickelson Trail, however, is absolutely spectacular, and I would rank this marathon second only to Big Sur in terms of scenery.

The only problem, as Ravers have been noting for years, is the start time. An 8:00 AM start time in South Dakota in June means that the sun will be high in the sky from the start. In 2026, race temps began in the 70s and got well into the 80s. This makes it tough to fully appreciate the scenery.

I hate to be critical about a race that’s put on by such nice folks, but this race really doesn’t deserve a 4.8 “trophy” rating on RaceRaves.

Only about half the race is scenic and along the river. Several miles are either on neighborhood sidewalks or along tight shoulders of fairly busy roads. In these sections, you really have to watch out for uneven surfaces and deep cracks and potholes and the like. I actually tripped and fell, which was a first.

Also, the signage is sparse in parts of the course and consists of paper arrows on traffic cones. It was a windy day, so many of the cones had tipped over, and because the marathon field is so small and shares a multi-use path with the general public, there were some anxious moments.

Race staff and volunteers were very, very nice. There just weren’t enough of them, and some didn’t know the answer to pretty basic questions about race logistics.

Despite all the above, I’m glad I ran the race and would give it a faint recommendation. But I flew across the country to check Washington off my list, and this race really doesn’t justify that kind of investment. I have to think there are better options in the state.

Pros: super easy packet pickup and parking close to start. Everybody is just so nice. Neat course through Coast Guard base and lovely, woodsy neighborhoods.

Cons: a bit congested through the first couple miles, not a whole lot of crowd support, and water stations every two miles (I prefer every mile, especially in the second half).

I created an account solely to give this race some love.

As others have mentioned, the race director is kind, responsive, and a consummate professional, and all the logistics of the race operate like clockwork.

The course could hardly be easier, the epitome of “pancake flat.” The one exception is the bridge over the Mississippi, which is worth the mile-long, gradual incline for the views of the river.

If you need a wide variety of scenery and ample fan support, this might not be the best race for you. If, like me, you reach a Zen-like state on long, flat, rural highways, the course is perfect.
