This is the 4th time I’ve run this race and unfortunately, they had to modify the course due to the trail damage from recent storms. Despite a couple of boring out and backs, we still got to run through scenic Holdener with views of vineyards and snow-capped hills along the route. I love that so many locals run this race year after year with lots of community support. The best part is the post-run festival with free tastings from top-notch local wineries and breweries. Areas for improvement: No gels at mile 8 aid station, more snacks at the finish would’ve been nice, and the course seemed to be just shy of 13.1 miles.

I’ve heard so much about this race and that it should be on every trail runner’s bucket list. It definitely didn’t disappoint with 4500 ft elevation change, 600+ steps and names like Cardiac Hill and Insult to Injury for portions of the route. Toughest trail race I’ve ever run but also one of the most rewarding with gorgeous views of SF skyline and Stinson Beach. Amazed by the runners that fly down the hills with all the roots and rocks sticking out so just got out of the way when they passed. Great volunteer support from aid stations to the start/finish lines. Highly recommend signing up for one of the limited spots for this race at least once!

This was my 2nd half marathon and 2nd race for the Golden Gate Series (first was the Livermore Half). Overall, I thought the production was well run, water stations were at approx every even mile but not sure if the mile markers were that accurate. The scenery ranged from industrial, downtown historic buildings, Chinatown, quaint local neighborhoods and the beautiful Lake Merritt. The cops and race volunteers were all very friendly and cheered you on but not many other spectators were on the course. It was mostly flat with a few gradual inclines so I was able to PR. The after race snacks and entertainment were great except Sambazon ran out of their Acai bowls which was a huge bummer since I was really looking forward to it. I’m not a beer drinker but managed to try a nice refreshing one from Sierra Nevada. The medal we got was very substantial and heavy, very nice bling to earn after a great run.

If you’re looking for something with a laid back vibe, small crowds and beautiful trails, try one of the races sponsored by Sasquatch Racing. They only registered 300 runners and they were split between 5k/10k/Half Marathon. The post race free massage by Psoas Massage + Bodywork was on point, they really focus on your trouble areas. The free beer and lively entertainment wasn’t bad either. The scavenger hunt along the trail was a nice touch although I don’t think the 5K route had any. Guess I’ll have to run the 10K next year!

It rained the morning of the race which kept some racers at home so it wasn’t as crowded as in previous years (so I’ve been told). It’s a laid back, low key local race that coincides with the city’s St. Patrick’s Day Festival. The runners were all very friendly and some wore costumes. Strollers were allowed and a good number of kids ran the race. The course went through local streets, neighborhoods and part of the Iron Horse Trail and ended at the civic center. Whole Foods gave away lots of free bananas, nutrition bars, drinks and mini scones at the race festival. A local Irish band entertained the runners and many local businesses participated in the raffle.

My company’s women’s leadership organization (Oracle Women’s Leadership or OWL) sponsored runners for this race. I hadn’t run a 5K for many years and decided it would be a great way to celebrate turning the big 4-0 as well as supporting a great cause. The race had a great atmosphere, almost bittersweet as many were breast cancer survivors or were running in memory of loved ones. Fun group warm up and great views while running down the Embarcadero from the Ferry Building to AT&T park and back. Nice easy 5K in a beautiful city.
