This was a tough course, with rolling hills at the start and finish. But, as a CIM training run, this was a good reality check. Being able to run with the same pacers that will be pacing the marathon was extremely helpful.

The good: CIM pacers, rolling hills to mimic the marathon course, nice finisher’s medal and beanie, pizza and beer after the race, great volunteers encouraging all the runners, and all the proceeds go towards upkeep on the Parkway!

The bad: not enough toilets on the course (one per aid station) so there were lines at every stop. (On the plus side, they had plenty of TP.)

Overall, I’d recommend this race for anyone running the marathon to help adjust your race day strategy and fine tune your pacing, fuel and electrolytes.

If you’re looking for a race in Tennessee, the Great Smoky Mountains 5K is a great one to try! I was debating whether or not to go for the half marathon, and decided to start small. The 5K is a great race for folks of all ages and abilities, and although this one had some rolling hills toward the end, it was largely flat — a plus when you’re already in the mountains! This was a fun race, with lovely scenery, friendly spectators, helpful volunteers, and a surprisingly full snack box of new items to try. The medal and race shirt are both lovely, and I enjoyed racing through Townsend, TN. Next year I might even go for the half!

This was my first destination race, and it was a blast! I loved getting to explore Santa Cruz before the race began, and even though the starting line was crowded AF (my race buddies and I couldn’t even get to our actual corral because folks were crammed in so tight), I ended up running a PB. The scenery along the course is amazing. It’s largely along the coast, so you can see the ocean and feel the breeze off the water the entire time. No matter how hot it might be inland, Santa Cruz will be cool, which makes for great racing weather. I started off thinking I would just run the race super slow, based on the crowds, but once I got going I spotted some folks from my running group up ahead and determined to reach up with them so I could pace myself. I ended up hanging with them the whole time, which pushed my time faster (yay, PB!). I really appreciated the reusable water bottle at the end of the race, as well as the snacks, although a burrito from a nearby Mexican joint right on the beach really hit the spot — maybe next year the organizers can arrange for them to feed us afterward? (I would pay extra to have a tasty burrito included in the race price!) It’s a bit disappointing that W2W doesn’t offer a medal, but the experience of running from Santa Cruz to Capitola is really what made the trip worthwhile. If you can carpool with someone who isn’t racing, a private vehicle or Uber/Lyft back to the start seems like the way to go vs. the shuttle bus back.

Loved this race! Everyone was super festive and high energy, the course took us through Old Sac after crossing the iconic Tower Bridge, then along the river and through Land Park and the Fab 40s before passing the Capitol and ending back in West Sac at the baseball stadium’s home plate. Lots of great scenery, amazing volunteers, a beautiful finishers medal, and plenty of food post-race. I will definitely be running this one again.

If you’ve never run a 5k with 3,000 hyped school kids, you’ve never lived. The MaraFUNrun is an annual event for the kids enrolled in the Runnin’ for Rhett after school program, and members of the community are invited to join the kids as they race for pure fun. Whether you’re giving the 5k your first try or want a nice shakeout run before the CIM, this is a wonderful race for the pure joy of running. The kids are all super excited to be there, and their energy is contagious. You’ll run this one with a smile on your face, watching them all experience the course for the first time, so happy to grab water at the aid station and keep on running. Run it with your favorite kiddo or support them by volunteering with the Blue Crew!
